Background: Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a group of fatal, neurodegenerative diseases that affect multiple species, including sheep, cattle, and humans. A misfolded, pathogenic isoform (PrPD) of the normal, host-encoded, cellular prion protein (PrPC) is the causative agent for TSEs.
