Seizures following surgery for supratentorial extratemporal low-grade tumors in children: a multicenter retrospective study

Abstract: OBJECTIVEResection of brain tumors may lead to new-onset seizures but may also reduce seizure rates in patients presenting with seizures. Seizures are seen at presentation in about 24% of patients with brain tumors. For lesional epilepsy in general, early resection is associated with improved seizure control. “…The models in which seizure freedom is assessed have varied between studies. Pediatric population studies report post-operative seizure occurrence prior to one week [ 27 , 28 ] and one month [ 12 ] was a negative prognostic sign for seizure freedom. Similar adult cohort studies have used 6-12 months post-operatively to define Engel's outcome [ 25 , 29 ].…”

“…The titles/abstracts of each were screened against the study inclusion criteria, leading to the identification of 96 records for further screening, of which 7 could not be located. After a full-text review, 31 studies 11,22-51 were included in the present analysis (Table 1). Across studies, a total of 1206 patients with complete follow-up and outcome data were included, of whom 830 (68.82%) underwent ECoG-guided resection.…”
