Seismites in Quaternary sediments of southeastern Altai

Abstract: We study earthquake-induced soft-sediment deformation (seismites) in reference Quaternary sections of southeastern Altai. Sediments in the sections bear signature of liquefaction and fluidization and deformation is localized in thin (few centimeters to 0.5–1.0 m) continuously striking and frequently repeated layers sandwiched between undeformed sediments. The soft-sediment deformation records coseismic motion of different slip geometries. Seismic origin is also inferred for layers and lenses of coarse colluviu… Show more

“…High seismicity of the SE Altai is evidenced by paleoruptures, numerous large Holocene earthquake induced landslides, and seismic convolutions in soft sediments (Fig. 2) (Butvilovsky, 1993;Rogozhin and Platonova, 2002;Rogozhin et al, 2007;Deev et al, 2009and Agatova et al, 2006, 2014a. Recently it was supported by the 2003 Chuya earthquake (M S =7.3).…”

“…The failure of the rock slide dam and the draining of such a lake might have caused a substantially larger flood than typical spring floods of the Katun' River. Notably, the seismic factor might have played a role during both the formation and break of the rock slide dam, because seismites of different types were found in the lacustrine sediments (Deev et al, 2009).…”
