Sedimentation in Lake Baikal is significantly affected by continuous seismic activity in the Baikal Rift Zone. Our study shows that historical earthquakes, as well as recent seismic events, considerably influenced sedimentation in this deep tectonic basin. Here we present some of the results of extensive international research activities during the period of 1996–2019. To identify traces of seismic events in the uppermost sediments (<1.5 m), short cores were recovered from many coring stations throughout the entire lake. Based on lithological descriptions, measurements of magnetic susceptibility, and concentration of inorganic and organic components, we identified earthquake indicators in the sediment cores. Impacts of historical earthquakes were traced within South Baikal (near the Sharyzhalgai Station and the Station 106-km of the Circum-Baikal railway, hereafter CBR) and Proval Bay (near the Selenga River delta).

Со гласно работе [Mel'nikova et al, 2010], события 7го класса были представительны для землетрясений не посредственно БРЗ (то есть для районов рифтовых впадин и их ближайшего горного окружения) и для периода аналоговой регистрации, что подтверждается графиком повторяемости для того периода. Тем не ме нее необходимо отметить, что специальные исследо вания представительности каталога БРЗ и пространст венновременной изменчивости этого показателя не проводились, поэтому принятое для анализа значение К≥6.6, возможно, для некоторых районов и некоторых периодов времени является переоцененным.…”

Identification of earthquake aftershock and swarm sequences in the Baikal rift zone

The catalog of earthquakes (К R ≥6.6) which occurred in the Baikal rift zone (BRZ) was declastered, and the results are presented in the article. Aftershocks of seismic events (К R ≥12.5) were determined by the software developed by V.B. Smirnov (Lomonosov Moscow State University) with application of the algorithm coauthored by G.M. Molchan and O.E. Dmitrieva. To ensure proper control of the software application, aftershocks were also selected manually. The results of declustering show that aftershocks of the earthquakes (К R ≥12.5) account for about 25 per cent of all seismic events in the regional catalog. Aftershocks accompanied 90 per cent of all the earthquakes considered as main shocks. Besides, earthquake swarms, including events with К R ≥11, were identified. The results of this study show that, in the BRZ, the swarms and strong events with aftershocks are not spatially separated, and this conclusion differs from the views of the previous studies that reviewed data from a shorter observation period. Moreover, it is noted that the swarms may consist of several main shocks accompanied by aftershocks. The data accumulated over the last fifty years of instrumental observations support the conclu sion made earlier that the swarms in BRZ occur mainly in the northeastward direction from Lake Baikal and also confirm the trend of a small number of aftershocks accompanying earthquakes in the southwestern part of the Baikal rift zone.
