Nevado del Huila is an active volcano in Colombia having high explosive potential and serious hazard for surrounding population. Here we present the first 3‐D seismic velocity model of the Nevado del Huila Volcanic Complex based on local earthquake tomography. We used 13,790 events with the corresponding 49,412 P wave and 47,972 S wave arrival times recorded by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Popayán (Colombia). The period of observations from 2007 to 2016 covers stages of eruptions (first registered to date) and repose of the volcano. The seismic structure reveals two prominent nearly vertical anomalies with high Vp/Vs ratio that are interpreted as conduits connecting the volcano structures with a deeper seated magma reservoir. The anomaly beneath the southern flank of the volcano is limited by the Calambayú Fault and coincides with the dense seismicity cluster. We interpret this anomaly as the pathway of fluids following the weakened rocks along the fault zone. Another anomaly located beneath the main summit of Nevado del Huila probably represents the magma conduit that fed the previous eruption of this volcano. The seismicity here is not as intensive as that beneath the southern flank, which is possibly caused by higher temperature and ductile properties of rocks in the conduit. At depths from 2 to 4 km below surface, we observe the limit between higher Vp/Vs below and lower Vp/Vs above that possibly represents the level of fluid degassing due to decompression.

Coda Q -1 was calculated at Nevado del Ruiz Volcano (NRV) before and after two phreatomagmatic eruptions (November 1985, September 1989 and for a period of stability (May 1987) using a functional form for coda derived from a single scattering model (Sato 1977). Substantial changes were found before and after the eruptions. The highest value of Q -1 was found during the November 1985 eruption, an intermediate value for the September 1989 eruption, and the lowest value for May 1987. It seems that the changes in coda Q -1 at NRV have a still-unknown relationship with the volume or magnitude of the eruption. A relatively strong frequency dependence was found for all periods. Also Q -1 clearly changed with time, suggesting that the scattering was strong for the eruption of November 1985 and decreased for the eruption of September 1989, and that the intrinsic absorption probably increased. This suggests the possibility that crystallization is taking place in the NRV magma. The clear change of coda Q -1 before and after the eruptions at NRV also suggests the possibility that coda Q -1 is a premonitory tool of activity at this volcano.

Los aspectos geoquímicos y el marco tectónico de la actividad efusiva del período Ruiz Ancestral (2.0 a 1.0 Ma) del Volcán Nevado del Ruiz (VNR) son discutidos en este artículo. El VNR se localiza a 4° 50-55’ N y 75° 14-20’ W y se eleva a 5,390 msnm, en el sector más septentrional de la cadena volcánica andina en la Cordillera Central (Colombia). Datos químicos de roca total en muestras de andesitas y riodacitas de los diferentes sitios de emisión reportados comparten características específicas: SiO2 = 56 y 70.1% en peso, relativamente altos de MgO y medios de K2O; proporciones bajas de FeO/MgO: < 1.9 patrones de contenidos elementos de tierras raras poco fraccionados, bajo contenido de Y y REE pesadas; Sr entre 500 y 1,000 ppm y Ba hasta 1,600 ppm. Las proporciones de K/Rb muestran correlación negativa con SiO2 y con Rb, lo cual sugiere procesos de asimilación y cristalización fraccionada (ACF). Las proporciones de Rb/Sr, Ba/Sr y Rb/Ba muestran correlación positiva con SiO2, típicas de tendencias calcoalcalinas, sólo las suites más ácidas presentan un marcado carácter adaquítico. Durante el período Ruiz Ancestral, la falla de Villa María-Termales (N75ÂºW) controló el emplazamiento de magmas al occidente del eje volcánico N-S, evidenciado por el alineamiento paralelo de pequeños volcanes monogenéticos con el sistema de fallas, los cuales fueron alimentados lateralmente por flujos de magma desde el sistema de almacenamiento intermedio localizado entre 5 y 10 km por debajo de la posición del actual Volcán Nevado del Ruiz.
