Seismicity and Geologic Structures Indubitable in Wadi Hagul, North Eastern Desert, Egypt

Abstract: Paleo and recent earthquakes have been recorded in Wadi Hagul area and its environs, which have left behind geologic structures of deformation preserved in exposed sedimentary rocks. To evaluate such deformation and surface break, different techniques and data types are used compromising image processing techniques, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), seismicity data, as well as, field investigation. The field investigation clarified that the study area is enriched with soft-sediment deformation structures e… Show more

“…As a result, several integrated development projects are being worked on that implement many critical infrastructure areas such as quarries, roads, power plants, mines, landfills, and resorts. The most important national project is the development of the northern part of the Gulf of Suez pipeline surcharge, implemented through the main track of the study area and its environment [ 43 ]. Three main sectors can be recognized based on the vegetation and geological aspects of Wadi Hagul: upstream, middle, and downstream.…”

“…Within the dome-ring complexes, only very few dikes can be detected, whereas within ring basins and along larger shear zones around the plutons dikes are concentrated such as visible at the SE border of Egypt (Figure 8). Along the Red Sea higher earthquake activity has been documented (Figure 9a) with earthquake magnitudes > 5 [18,20,21]. The seismicity is related to the interactions between the Eurasia, Africa and Arabian plates.…”

“…The amplification or deamplification and lengthening of seismic ground motion has to be taken into account. Local site effects can have strong influences on the amplitude and duration of ground shaking [21]. Little is known so far about those effects in these parts of Egypt.…”
