Seismic structure of the volcanic apron north of Gran Canaria

Abstract: High-resolution reflection seismic profiles through the volcanic apron north of Gran Canaria collected during Meteor Cruise 24 were interpreted in the light of results from Leg 157 (Sites 953 and 954). The shape of the submarine island flanks of Gran Canaria and the two adjacent islands of Fuerteventura to the east and Tenerife to the west were reconstructed by interpretating seismic profiles that penetrated the sediments covering the deeper portions of the volcanic pedestals. The ~4750-m-deep flank of Fuertev… Show more

“…Furthermore, the northwestern flank of La Palma is now incised [ Urgeles et al , 1999] and is <2 Ma [ Carracedo et al , 1999]. This timescale yields a mean denudation rate of 50 m/Myr; however, if erosion occurred over the longer 6 Myr lifetime of the edifice flanks [ Funck and Lykke‐Andersen , 1998], the mean erosion rate was 17 m/Myr.…”

“…The Anaga massif has been dated (K‐Ar) onshore as 3.6–6.5 Ma [ Ancochea et al , 1990] and offshore as 6 Ma by seismic correlation with ODP Site 953 [ Funck and Lykke‐Andersen , 1998]. More accurate Ar‐Ar dates [ Thirlwall et al , 2000] are older for a given location and suggest that volcanism was more persistent.…”

“…As the sequence is closer to the island, there is more volcanoclastic material mixed with the deep sea pelagic sediments. Bottom currents also affect the sediments, as has been reported in other areas of the Canaries, such as the channel between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, in which sediments are entirely modified by erosional currents (Funck and Lykke-Andersen, 1998), or the channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, where Teide Group (1997) recognized sediments whose internal morphology suggested deposition under the influence of bottom currents, probably the North Atlantic Deep Water at a depth of 1500-3900 m.…”

“…Studies around Gran Canaria and Tenerife include refraction seismic transects across both islands (Watts 1994;Watts et al 1997;Ye et al 1999;Canales et al 2000;Krastel and Schmincke 2002), high resolution seismic studies of the volcaniclastic apron (Funck et al 1996;Geisslinger et al 1996;Teide Group 1997;Funck and Lykke-Andersen 1998b;Funck and Schmincke 1998), morphological work around both islands (Watts Fig. 1 Overview map of the Canary Islands.…”
