Seismic signals in a courting male jumping spider (Araneae:Salticidae)

Abstract: In the study of animal signals, spiders have emerged as a classic example of signalling using substrate-propagated vibrations (Barth, 1998). The vibrations propagated through the delicate webs of orb-weaving spiders are clear examples of signalling through vibrations (Barth, 1998;Finck, 1981;Frohlich and Buskirk, 1982;Klarner and Barth, 1982;Landolfa and Barth, 1996;Masters, 1984;Masters and Markl, 1981;Vollrath, 1979), but the majority of spiders may also use substrate-propagated vibrations in such varied sub… Show more

“…It uses the Doppler shift between the emitted laser beam and its returning reflection from the web to generate a digital representation of the vibrations (for methods see Masters, 1984;Elias et al, 2003). While this technology has become increasingly available and affordable to researchers, it does have some limitations, particularly when measuring vibrations in spider webs.…”

“…Interestingly, these vibratory components are frequently associated with dynamic motion displays that incorporate ornamented and/ or colored or patterned male body parts (Elias et al, 2012), highlighting the multimodal nature of many spider courtship displays. Within and between species, there is in fact a tight correlation between visual and vibratory signal components, suggesting that synchronizing the two modalities is important (Elias et al, 2003(Elias et al, , 2012. In addition to this complexity, the multimodal courtship displays of some species of Habronattus vary temporally as well (Elias et al, 2012).…”

“…Trials lasted 30·min and were only included if males courted. Habronattus dossenus courtship comprises four phases identifiable by stereotyped postures and movements (Elias et al, 2003). Phase 1 includes only visual signals (Elias et al, 2003).…”

“…3,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] Possible functions include, for example, independent signals, redundant signals, and amplifying components of signals. Amplifying can occur between fixed (e.g., ornamentation) and flexible (e.g., behavioral) cues 20,21 when behavioral displays amplify, that is improve, the detection or discrimination of ornamental traits, such as the red ventral coloration in threespine sticklebacks 22 or when ornamental traits serve the detection of courtship displays.…”
