Seismic Sequence Stratigraphic Sub-Division Using Well Logs and Seismic Data of Taranaki Basin, New Zealand

Abstract: This study focuses on the sequence stratigraphy and the dominated seismic facies in the Central Taranaki basin. Four regional seismic sequences namely SEQ4 to SEQ1 from bottom to top and four boundaries representing unconformities namely H4 to H1 from bottom to top have been traced based on the reflection terminations. This was validated using well logs information. An onlapping feature on the seismic section indicates a new perspective surface separated between the upper and lower Giant formation, which indic… Show more

“…Analysis of seismic facies is fundamental in identifying sediment sequences based on seismic patterns [42]. The investigated horizons served as lithological boundaries and were related to unit contacts in the Susak more-1 and Alessandra-1 wells.…”

“…Isochron maps, which depict differences in TWT between two seismic reflectors (seismic events), were used to interpret thickness variations [42]. These maps provide valuable information about the palaeostructure and thickness variations in the lower horizon during the deposition of the upper horizon [43].…”

“…At the same time during recent years new approaches to the use of the sequence-stratigraphy method have been proposed by many researchers (Abd Al-Salam Al-Masgari et al, 2021;Ainsworth, 2010;Miller et al, 2018;Nwaezeapu et al, 2018;Okpikoro and Olorunniwo, 2010;Zhu et al, 2013). In the work by Abd Al-Salam Al-Masgari et al, sequence-stratigraphic research was carried out mainly on the basis of seismic data.…”

“…The aim of this work was to identify the seismo-facies, boundaries of the se-quences and system tracts. As a result of seismo-facies analysis the authors outlined and described the dominating seismic facies, which were interpreted as a possible reservoir for accumulation of hydrocarbons (Abd Al-Salam Al-Masgari et al, 2021).…”

“…Advancements in modern seismic interpretation technologies offer several seismic attributes to compute structural attribute volumes and to enhance faults in seismic data for automatic fault extraction. Some attributes compute the continuity of seismic reflections, such as semblance [2], or coherency [5,[31][32][33][34], while others measure the discontinuity, such as variance [4,35], or gradient magnitude [36], etc. These attributes are dependent either on amplitude contrast or reflector's continuity and highlight faults only when the set criteria are fulfilled.…”
