Seismic Hazard in Terms of Spectral Accelerations and Uniform Hazard Spectra in Northern Algeria

Abstract: Seismic hazard in terms of spectral acceleration (SA) has been estimated for the first time in northern Algeria. For this purpose, we have used the spatially-smoothed seismicity approach. The present paper is intended to be a continuation of previous work in which we have evaluated the seismic hazard in terms of peak ground acceleration (PGA) using the same methodology. To perform these evaluations, four complete and Poissonian seismic models have been used. One of them considers earthquakes with magnitudes ab… Show more

“…In both cases, an evident linear relationship can be observed. These two relationships were inferred, using less data and only results for rock, in PELÁ EZ et al (2006). Table 2 shows estimates for the slope and its standard error for the two fits.…”

“…Different zoning models were initially considered for the study region, including those of Martín (1983); Muñoz (1983); IPEEE (1993); López Casado et al (1995); Molina (1998), the model defined for the Global Seismic Hazard Assessment Project (GSHAP), Bouhadad and Laouami (2002), the model in which the hazard map of the Spanish seismic Building Code is based (NCSE-02), Peláez et al (2006); Hamdache (1998) and Aoudia et al (2000).…”

“…The north of Africa Zoning models were chosen after a revision of the specialized literature, finally considering the zoning proposed Hamdache (1998) supplemented by data of Peláez et al (2006) (HAM98) and the zoning proposed by Aoudia et al (2000) (AOU00). Both models seem quite reliable, and they are the most complete and best explained for northern Africa on the basis of the information taken into account for the definition of boundaries and estimation of seismic parameters.…”

Based on seismogenic studies and ground motion models defined by Meghraoui et al (1988), Boudiaf (1996) and Geomatrix (2006), Ait Meziane (2012) developed a standard PSHA for rock site conditions with focus on the historical site of the Casbah in Algiers (reference coordinate 3.05E-36.78N).…”
