Seismic behaviour of steel plate shear wall systems with staggered web configurations

Abstract: Summary Unstiffened steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) are used as lateral load‐resisting systems in building structures. The energy dissipation mechanism of SPSWs consists of the tension yielding of web plates and the formation of plastic hinges at the ends of horizontal boundary elements. However, vertical boundary elements (VBEs) of high‐rise SPSWs may experience high axial forces under lateral loading. This study explores the effectiveness of staggering of web plates on the reduction of VBE forces and drift r… Show more

“…To overcome the drawbacks and further improve the performance of SPSW systems, many studies have been carried out to develop alternative types of steel shear walls and to propose corresponding design approaches. [4][5][6] Emami et al 7 developed trapezoidally corrugated steel shear walls with a sufficient energy dissipation capacity and ductility ratio. Lu et al 8 and Jacobsen et al 9 carried out parametric analyses of SPSWs with unequal length slits and achieved an excellent seismic performance by reasonably designing the length and arrangement of these slits.…”

“…Shear wall structure and frame structure are two kinds of frequently used structures in daily life. There are various studies focusing on different types of shear wall, and some methods and studies are proposed about seismic performance by different researchers around the world. As for prefabricated concrete structures, prefabricated shear wall structure is a newly research hotspot, due to its convenient construction, low environmental pollution, and high quality in joints.…”
