Recently, substantial investigations were developed on a polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) confined concrete (PFCC) structure owing to its superior mechanical behavior and durability. However, a convenient and effective joint configuration between the PFCC columns and reinforced concrete (RC) beams still requires in-depth study. In the present work, the seismic performance of an RC beam to PFCC column exterior joint with steel tube connector (STC) is systematically studied. Eleven joint specimens are fabricated and tested, with the steel ratio of STC, reinforcement ratio of the frame beam, axial compression ratio, stirrup ratio of the joint and CFRP strips spacing as the design parameters. The experimental results, that is, 8 the failure modes, hysteretic response, ductility, strength, stiffness and energy dissipation, are analyzed. All specimens exhibit joint shear failure, although the joints with STC exhibit significantly better performance those of ordinary joint. In addition to reducing the axial compression ratio, the reinforcement ratio of the frame beam or increasing the stirrup ratio of the joint can also produce a positive effect. Furthermore, the numerical analysis of the exterior joints is performed; the calculated skeleton curves agree well with the test results, and additional parametric studies (i.e., the diameter, height and concrete strength of the joint) are carried out based on the verified numerical model.

Behaviour and Design of Bolt-Coupler Connections under Compression in Prefabricated CFST Columns

The paper presents the investigated results of bolt-coupler connections under compression experimentally. Bolt-coupler connections have been developed recently for prefabricated column-to-column (PCC) connections to simplify the construction process of prefabricated concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns and to transfer the upper column load to the bottom column through bolt-coupler connections. However, the behaviour of bolt-coupler connections under compression has not been investigated in the past although there are some experimental and numerical studies conducted on bolt-coupler connections under tension. To address these research gaps, the behaviour of bolt-coupler connections under compression has been investigated. The main parameters considered in this study are bolt diameters (M16, M20, M24), bolt grades (8.8, 10.9 grade), gap inside the coupler between two bolts of bolt-coupler connection (0, 10, 20 mm), and coupler grade (5.6, 8.8 grade). It is observed that the ultimate capacity of bolt-coupler connections is reduced significantly with an increase in the bolt gap inside the coupler of the bolt-coupler connection. Based on the test data, a design equation is developed to determine the design capacity of bolt-coupler connections under compression, which will be very useful in designing the PCC connections of sustainable prefabricated CFST columns.

Solid Analysis of Torsional Effects on Small Radius Steel Plate Composite Beams Based on ABAQUS

In recent years, steel-mixed composite structures have been widely adopted in China, especially in projects such as urban overpasses and viaducts where steel plate composite girder bridges are widely used. However, the research on small radius steel plate composite curved girder bridges is relatively limited, and the theory of structural stress characteristics and computational analysis is lagging behind. It is found that the radius of curvature has a small effect on the torsional stress of the bridge top plate, but the torsional stress of the steel main girder is higher; the torsional stress of the steel main girder rises with the increase of the computed span diameter, and the concrete slab has a smaller effect; the number of steel girders has a small effect on the torsional stress of the bridge top plate but a significant effect on the steel main girder torsional stress. The results of the study can provide a reliable reference for future projects.
