Seismic and Energy Integrated Retrofitting of Existing Buildings with an Innovative ICF-Based System: Design Principles and Case Studies

Abstract: This work proposes an innovative integrated retrofitting system aiming to improve both the seismic and energy performance of existing reinforced concrete and masonry buildings. The system is based on engineered insulating concrete form panels, installed on the outside of existing buildings as a shell exoskeleton. A key major advantage of the proposed system is that it addresses the contemporary improvement of seismic and energy performances of existing buildings in a single installation stage, operating exclus… Show more

“…While steel is the most commonly used material for exoskeletons due to its versatility and speed of assembly, proposals based on RC exoskeletons can be also found in the literature. For example, Pertile et al [41] proposed a partially precast solution comprising insulation panels and steel rebars, with the RC inner layer cast on site using the thermal insulators as formwork. In this way, an external RC shell structure is formed (see Figure 2b).…”

“…Proposals based on RC exoskeletons for integrated renovation can be found in the literature, such as an RC shell structure ( (Pertile et al, 2021), see Figure 4) or an external RC frame ( (Pozza et al, 2021), see Figure 5), combined with EPS insulation panels. These solutions have the clear advantage of being applied from the outside, limiting invasiveness and interruption of usage.…”

“…Other examples refer to shell-exoskeletons, e.g. using insulated RC walls (Pertile et al 2021) or RC frames combined with thermal insulation panels or new masonry infills (Manfredi and Masi 2018).…”
