Segregation behavior of binary mixtures of cylindrical particles with different length ratios in the rotating drum

Abstract: Particle shape impacts the flow behavior of granular material but this effect is still far from being fully understood. Using discrete element method, the current work explores the segregation phenomena of the binary mixtures of cylindrical particles (differing in length but with the same diameter) in the three-dimensional rotating drum operating in the rolling regime, with each cylindrical particle fully represented by the superquadric equation. The important characteristics and the effect of length ratio on … Show more

“…Segregation is a natural incidence that occurs in granular particle mixtures with different shapes, sizes, and densities. The mixing of particles to create a uniform blend is challenging and becomes even more difficult if there is a variation in physical properties of blending particles. The handling of granules (grains, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and detergents) is a particular concern during composite processing and manufacturing where both storage (caking) and transport (natural segregation and blockage) of granules are often considered as problematic. Transport of such blends inevitably leads to a natural segregation process.…”

“…They proposed that the growth and stabilization of a regular streak pattern required the two sets of particles to differ significantly in angle of repose. Yang et al 27 studied the segregation of cylindrical particles with different length ratios. They argued that the cylindrical particles tend to align their major axis perpendicular to the drum axis.…”

“…machines, where the rotation axis of the vessel is orthogonal to the direction of gravity vector. Most of them are so-called "ball mills" and are used for the raw material processing [4][5][6][7][8][9]. 2. machines, where the rotation axis of the vessel is parallel to the direction of gravity vector.…”
