Segregation and urban spatial structure in Barcelona

Abstract: We propose an analysis to identify the degree of spatial segregation among different communities of residents in Barcelona. We elaborate a theoretical setting as an extension of the monocentric framework, yielding the creation of mixed spatial units. Our idea is to assess the extent to which spatial segregation is connected to the urban spatial structure, the neighbourhood's status, and the spatial autocorrelation. As a novelty, we perform the empirical exercise by relying on an original database that gathers … Show more

“…If we add to this that the spatial dependence on the cyclical sensitivity is still present when estimating the SEM and disappears with the SAR model, we consider that the latter is the true data‐generating process. These results, and especially the value of the ρ parameter in the SAR model, confirm the presence of global spatial dependence (LeSage & Pace, 2009; García‐López, Nicolini, & Roig, 2020; López‐Torres, Nicolini, & Prior, 2017) and therefore also the BWE hypothesis.…”

“…Our aim is to provide a general measure of the degree of the evenness of the distribution of the three selected communities for the whole city of Barcelona that is comparable over time despite urban administrative change in district structure. 18 In doing so, we complement the statistics produced in Garcia-Lopez et al (2020).…”

“…Unlike urban planning, which focuses on the spatial pattern of cities, this study highlights the spatial representation of human behavior and economic and social activities from a geographical perspective. Currently, the identification of the urban spatial structure focuses mostly on three facets: first, a model analysis and statistical testing approach are used to incorporate location information and spatial distance into the research framework of spatial structure identification based on statistical indicators such as population size and employment-population density (Li, 2020;Veneri, 2018;Garcia-Lopez et al, 2020;Luo et al, 2021). Second, identifying urban spatial information based on the multisource remote sensing data, including Landsat, MODIS, SPOT, DMSP-OLS, and other remote sensing data (Yang et al, 2022), is performed to help researchers identify urban boundaries and structures more objectively and accurately (Yang et al, 2021a;Dembski et al, 2021;He et al, 2021;Hajrasouliha and Hamidi, 2017).…”
