Segmental colonic transit time

Abstract: Mean segmental transit time of radiopaque markers through the right colon, left colon and rectosigmoid areas of adults and children has been calculated form their distribution on consecutive plain films of the abdomen. Overall mean transit does not differ significantly in the large bowel between adults and children. However, there are regional differences within the colon in relation to age. Mean transit time in the right colon is 13.8 hours in adults and 7.7 in children (p less than 0.01). Corresponding value… Show more

“…Small intestinal transit time is more reproducible and has a range of about 3 -4 h [1,61]. Colonic transit time, on the other hand, is highly variable and is typically 10 -20 h [62][63][64].…”

“…Retention of more than 20% of markers (four or more markers) along all colonic segments or into an isolated colonic segment was considered abnormal; (2) a modified METCALF et al technique (15) consisted in ingestion of 20 radiopaque markers on days 1, 2 and 3 of the study and abdominal x-rays taken on days 4 and 7. Transit in hours at the right, left, and rectosigmoid colon was calculated by adding all markers seen in these regions on days 4 and 7 multiplied by a constant according to the original study of ARHAN et al (1) . Total transit time of more than 68 hours, right colonic transit time of more than 32 hours, left colonic transit time of more than 39 hours and rectosigmoid transit time of more than 36 hours were considered to be abnormal (15) .…”
