Abstract. We present I-band Surface Brightness Fluctuation (SBF) measurements for 16 early-type galaxies (3 giants, 13 dwarfs) in the central region of the Hydra cluster, based on deep photometric data in 7 fields obtained with VLT FORS1. From the SBF-distances to the galaxies in our sample we estimate the distance of the Hydra cluster to be 41. for the Cen30 component of Centaurus. Allowing for a thermal velocity dispersion of 200 km s −1 , this rules out a common peculiar flow velocity for both clusters at 98% confidence. We find that the 9× 10 15 M "Great Attractor" at a distance of 45 Mpc can explain the observed peculiar velocities if shifted about 15• towards the Hydra cluster position. Our results are inconsistent at 94% confidence with a scenario where the Centaurus cluster is identical to the GA. In order to better restrict partially degenerate Great Attractor parameters like its mass and distance, a recalculation of the local flow model with updated distance information over a larger area than covered by us would be needed.

It is crucial to understand how the Milky Way, the galaxy we can study in the most intimate detail, fits in amongst other galaxies. Key examples include the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) -i.e., the tight correlation between luminosity (L) and rotational velocity (V rot ) -and the 3-dimensional luminosity-velocity-radius (LV R) scaling relation. Several past studies have characterized the MW as a 1-1.5σ outlier to the TFR. This study reexamines such comparisons using new estimates of MW properties that are robust to many of the systematic uncertainties that have been a problem in the past and are based on assumptions consistent with those used for other spiral galaxies. Comparing to scaling relations derived from modern extragalactic data, we find that our Galaxy's properties are in excellent agreement with TFRs defined using any SDSS-filter absolute magnitude, stellar mass, or baryonic mass as the L proxy. We next utilize disk scale length (R d ) measurements to extend this investigation to the LV R relation. Here we find that our Galaxy lies farther from the relation than ∼90% of other spiral galaxies, yielding ∼9.5σ evidence that it is unusually compact for its L and V rot (based on MW errors alone), a result that holds for all of the L proxies considered. The expected R d for the MW from the LV R relation is ∼5 kpc, nearly twice as large as the observed value, with error estimates placing the two in tension at the ∼1.4σ level. The compact scale length of the Galactic disk could be related to other ways in which the MW has been found to be anomalous.

An important component of the Extragalactic Distance Database is a group of catalogs related to the measurement of H i line profile parameters. One of these is the All Digital H i catalog which contains an amalgam of information from new data and old. The new data result from observations with Arecibo and Parkes Telescopes and with the Green Bank Telescope, including continuing input since the award of the NRAO Cosmic Flows Large Program. The old data have been collected from archives, wherever available, particularly the Cornell University Digital H i Archive, the Nançay Telescope extragalactic H i archive, and the Australia Telescope H i archive. The catalog currently contains information on ∼15,000 profiles relating to ∼13,000 galaxies. The channel-flux per channel files, from whatever source, is carried through a common pipeline. The derived parameter of greatest interest is W m50 , the profile width at 50% of the mean flux. After appropriate adjustment, the parameter W mx is derived, the line width that statistically approximates the peak-to-peak maximum rotation velocity before correction for inclination, 2V max sini.
