Abstract

Among its weaknesses are the uneven treatment of Mexican immi grant children's adjustment to American life during the 1930s and 1940s; the slighting of the adaptive strategies of middle-class immigrants and Mexican American citizens and of the role that American education, espe cially public education, played in this process; and the failure to distinguish between cultural transformations and cultural formations. Despite these weaknesses, the book should be read by all those inter ested in cultural history, in minority history, and in the history of people of Mexican origin living in the United States.
