SeedCalc, a new automated R software tool for germination and seedling length data processing

Abstract: The need to optimize seed quality assessment using new, more accessible, and modern computational resources has led to the emergence of new tools. In this paper, we introduce SeedCalc, a new R software package developed to process germination and seedling length data. The functions included in SeedCalc allow fast and efficient data processing, offering greater reliability to the variables generated and facilitating statistical analysis itself since the data are already processed with the appropriate structure … Show more

“…The software provided measurements of shoot length (SL), primary root length (RL), and total length (TL) of seedlings. After that, the seedling length values obtained by SAPL® were processed using the SeedCalc package of the R software (Silva, Medeiros, & Oliveira, 2019a) to generate the uniformity (Castan et al, 2018), growth (Medeiros, Silva, Pereira, Oliveira, & Dias, 2020), and corrected vigor indices.…”

“…Com os dados obtidos foi determinado o tempo médio de germinação (TMG), o qual é expresso em dias e calculado através da equação proposta por Labouriau (1983), considerando o número de sementes germinadas no intervalo entre cada contagem (ni) e o tempo decorrido entre o início da germinação e a i-ésima contagem (ti), sendo: Silva et al (2019). A avaliação do comprimento e massa seca de plântulas foi realizada em diferentes períodos de tempo (96, 120, 144 e 168 horas após a montagem do teste).…”

“…Daily counts of the number of seeds exhibiting primary root protrusion and germinated seeds (normal seedlings) were carried out until the eighth day after sowing. From these data, the speed of germination index (GSI), the speed of primary root protrusion (RPS) and the synchrony were calculated, according to the formulas described in Silva et al (2019). All the variables obtained based on the germination test were calculated using the Germcalc function, contained in the package SeedCalc of the R software.…”
