Seed transmission of Papaya meleira virus in papaya (Carica papaya) cv. Maradol

Abstract: Papaya meleira virus (PMeV), the causal agent of papaya sticky disease, was first reported in Brazil and more recently in Mexico. Yield losses in papaya (Carica papaya) orchards related to this virus can be considerable over relatively short time spans. To date, very little is known regarding the transmission mechanisms of PMeV, which has made it difficult to effectively control the virus and to prevent dissemination. A few published reports have claimed that PMeV is not seed‐transmissible. However, in this st… Show more

“…In general, the first symptoms of the sticky disease appeared in plants that were 6 to 9 months old, depending upon the papaya variety. The initial onset of the incidence of sticky disease varied according to the source of inoculum, from seeds or alternative hosts and vectors, which played an important role in the quality of the papaya seedlings’ health [ 9 , 23 ].…”

“…However, another study conducted with seeds from C. papaya cultivar Maradol demonstrated that PMeV is seed-borne and that it can be transmitted to the next generation via contaminated seeds. Furthermore, this finding may explain how this virus appeared in Mexico [ 23 ]. The frequency of virus transmission by seeds can vary greatly depending on the virus-host interaction, and may be very small in some cases [ 25 , 26 ].…”

“…The presence of a viral dsRNA in diseased plants was confirmed, and it was possible to transmit the disease through the latex of infected plants to healthy plants [ 3 ] and also by seeds in cv. Maradol [ 11 ]. However, a cDNA library generated from papaya latex infected by a Mexican isolate (named PMeV-Mx) identified a 1154-bp sequence encoding a putative RdRp showing closer similarity to umbraviruses and no similarity to PMeV-RN.…”
