Background and Objective: Soil tillage and weed management are two factors that can be manipulated to increase the yield of corn.The objectives of this experiment were to study the application timing of atrazine and mesotrione mixture for weed control in no-tillage corn. Materials and Methods: The field experiment was organized in a split-plot design with 2 factors, the main plot was land preparation including no-tillage using glyphosate for land clearing, no-tillage using paraquat and conventional tillage, the sub-plot was the application timing of premixed formulation of atrazine and mesotrione which was 2, 3, 4 and 5 weeks after planting (WAP). Results: Using glyphosate is an appropriate measure for land clearing in the no-tillage system. The premixed formulation of atrazine and mesotrione applied at 2 and 3 WAP performed the highest efficacy of 95-100%. However, weeds were regrowth faster when the application was carried out at very early postemergence (2 WAP) indicated with the heaviest weeds biomass. The best growth and the highest yield of corn were found when the application time of the atrazine and mesotrione mixture was at 2 and 3 WAP. Conclusion: Glyphosate is an appropriate measure in no-tillage corn and the application time of 2 or 3 WAP of the atrazine and mesotrione showed the highest efficacy on weeds, the better growth and the highest yield of corn.

Southern corn leaf blight (SCLB) or Maydis leaf blight, caused by Bipolaris maydis, is an important disease of maize in the eastern and north-eastern part of India. Hence, to assess the severity and distribution of the disease in two distinct and major maize growing states i.e. Mizoram and West Bengal were selected. A roving survey was conducted under different agro-climatic conditions during the kharif season of 2019 and 2020 in three districts of West Bengal and as well as in Mizoram. The survey results revealed that SCLB was more prevalent in the plains of West Bengal in comparison to hilly areas of Mizoram. The mean SCLB incidence varied from 18.87% in Zemabawk, Mizoram to 63.22% in institutional farm, C-block, of BCKV, West Bengal. The mean disease severity ranged from 10.06 % in Muthi, Mizoram to 22.09% in Instructional Farm, Jaguli, BCKV, West Bengal. Both disease incidence and severity were highest at 99 DAS in all the locations surveyed. Successive surveys of SCLB in the maize growing belts across the country need to be conducted to develop a better understanding about the disease prevalence, intensity and severity under different agro-ecological conditions.

The experiment carried out during season (2021-2022), in two locations first in the village of “Abu maria” in the Tal Afar District (51 km) western of Nineveh Governorate, and the second location was in the Hamidat district of “Badoush” (20 km) northwest of Nineveh Governorate, the aim of studying was the response of growth and yield of two Cultivars of Maze (Dragma and Sengunto) for Slow Nitrogen Release fertilization (SNRF) at levels (0, 15, 30, 45 kg.ha−1) and the recommendation of the ministry of agriculture (95 urea and 50 kg di-ammonium phosphate – DAP – per ha−1), the experiment designed with the Complete Randomize Design (RCBD) in the split-plot, as the two cultivars were in the main plots, while the fertilizer treatments were in the subplots, the most important results were summarized as follows: There were significant differences between the cultivars for vegetative characteristics in both locations in: (Male Flowering, and Female Flowering), while in “Badoush” location recorded significant differences in characteristics: (plant height and cob height). The levels (30 and 45 kg.ha−1) in characteristics (plant height, cob height, and the number of leaves at locations of study, while the mentioned treatments were significant in the location of “Badush” for characteristics (Male Flowering and Leaf Area). The interaction between Cultivars and Fertilizer levels was significant (“Sungunto” with Fertilization level (30 kg.ha−1) in Plant height at both locations, While there were significant differences in the interaction mentioned at “Badoush” for leaf area. Regarding the yield and its components, there were significant differences in the characteristics in both locations with two cultivars in the study, where (SNRF) was significantly different in yield, where levels (30, and 45 kg. ha−1) were superior for all characteristics of yield and its components at both locations. In the interaction between cultivars and (SNRL), there were non-significant differences in “Abu Maria” for yield characteristics and its components. However, in “Badoush”, there were significant differences in rows number in cob. Regarding the quality characteristics (protein percentage, and yield of protein), The Cultivars recorded a significant difference in yield of protein at both locations, while the differences were significant in protein percentage in “Badoush”. The protein percentage was non-significant at both Study locations at (SNRL) levels.
