Seed production areas for the global restoration challenge

Abstract: Wild‐collected seed can no longer meet global demand in restoration. Dedicated Seed Production Areas (SPA) for restoration are needed and these require application of ecological, economic, and population‐genetic science. SPA design and construction must embrace the ecological sustainability principles of restoration.

“…Restoration of tropical forests in severely deforested landscapes is a major challenge because the hand‐collection of seeds and seedling production causes a bottleneck, particularly when attempting to represent a large pool of native species and genotypes (Brancalion et al ; Nevill et al ; Jalonen et al ). There are 40–53 thousand tree species within the tropics (Slik et al ) and, as might be expected, the literature is lacking in knowledge of their biology and current distribution.…”

“…To implement the use of local seed origins, the geographic delineation of seed zones, within which seeds are to be collected, propagated and sown, may be critical [18,19]. In Europe, the first attempts to delineate national seed zones for herbaceous plants have been made only recently [19].…”

“…The establishment of seed production areas (SPA) to enhance the quantity and quality of seeds is a key part of the solution (Broadhurst et al 2015a(Broadhurst et al , 2015bBroadhurst et al 2016;Nevill et al 2016). Seed production areas allow for the large-scale production of seeds of species in high demand for restoration, or those difficult to source, and temper the potential for overharvesting of wild plant populations (Broadhurst et al 2015b;Nevill et al 2016). They may also facilitate production of seeds of threatened species for meaningful larger-scale translocation or restoration programs (Offord et al 2004;Cochrane et al 2007).…”

“…Some unresolved aspects of SPA include the selection of appropriate genotypes for source material (Prober et al 2015), the design of SPA to maximise genetic fidelity of seeds produced, and the consequences of production processes (e.g. irrigation, fertiliser, harvesting) or maternal and climate effects on seed quality and regenerative traits (Broadhurst et al 2016;Nevill et al 2016).…”
