Seed-less amino-sugar mediated synthesis of gold nanostars

Abstract: By using aminosugars, a series of multipodal gold nanostructures has been obtained via a one-pot chemical reduction method in aqueous solution and at room temperature. The size and shape of these NPs were controlled either by adjusting the amount of reducing agent or by quenching the reaction at a given time.

“…The length of the thorns on the nanostars can be tailored by controlling the Au/Ag ratio in the growth solution. By using aminosugars, a series of multipodal gold nanostructures has been obtained via a onepot chemical reduction method in aqueous solution and at room temperature [ 47 ]. The size and shape of these nanoparticles were controlled either by adjusting the amount of reducing agent or by quenching the reaction at a given time.…”

“…Therefore, the solution remains stable for weeks. [92] In a typical synthesis, 400 μL of an aqueous solution of NaOH (1 mol L À 1 ), 5 mL of a glucosamine · HCl solution (10 À 1 mol L À 1 ) and 5 mL solution of HAuCl 4 (10 À 2 mol L À 1 ) were mixed in 90 mL of ultrapure H 2 O. Within 30 min, solutions with magnetic stirring at 25°C, experienced color transition from colorless to purple-blue.…”

“…The plasmon band shift is also more sensitive in the case of anisotropic or hollow (gold shells) nanoparticles and for this reason rod, branched or hollow nanoparticles are preferentially used for this purpose . In this work, we used a surfactant‐free method, based on the reduction of the gold tetrachloroauric acid by glucosamine for generating branched gold nanoparticles …”

“…The seedless way represents another simpler means of assembling AuNSs. It involves in situ formation of nanocrystal seeds and subsequent branched growth (Kedia and Kumar 2013;Moukarzel et al 2011;Umadevi et al 2014). For example, 2-[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazinyl] ethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) (Xie et al 2008) and glucosamine (Moukarzel et al 2011) can be applied to reduce Au 3?…”
