In Maqu County, Gansu Province, China, there are two types of grazing management. Under multi-household (MH) management, grassland is jointly managed by two or more households without fences between pastures. Under single-household (SH) management, fenced-off parcels of grassland are used. SH management was imposed in the belief that it would alleviate grassland degradation. Comparable land parcels with similar stocking rates subject to MH and SH management were identified and surveyed to determine the species present and species density (m )2 ). MH land had greater number values than SH but the differences were not significant. A further analysis indicated that the number of households using MH land influenced species richness. There was also evidence to suggest that the quality of the forage available deteriorated under SH management. It was concluded that MH grazing resulted in greater species richness than SH and is perhaps an important contributor to biodiversity conservation and grassland management for the region.

IntroductionBurrowing activities of plateau pikas cause widespread bare patches in alpine meadows on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, affecting the plant community composition and forage production. However, it is not clear how these bare patches influence the main forage composition in alpine meadows.MethodsTherefore, we investigated the plant communities in bare patches (BP) and neighboring control plots (CK) in alpine meadows in Maqu county in the Gannan region of China.ResultsOur results showed that plant communities in the CK plots differed from those in the BP plots. The sedge cover, number of sedge species and number of grass species were all significantly higher in the CK plots compared to the BP plots. However, grass cover and its dry weight were significantly higher in the BP plots. Grass cover and the grass dry weight in the BP plots were 1.859 times and 1.802 times higher than that in the CK plots across the five sites, respectively. Grasses also had a significantly higher cover and dry weight than sedge in the BP plots, grass cover was 66.5 times higher than the sedge cover, and the grass dry weight was 68.242 times that of the sedge dry weight. Therefore, bare patches resulting from plateau pika burrowing activity significantly increase the grass/sedge ratio in alpine meadows.DiscussionA potential explanation is that grasses have a stronger reproductive potential than sedges in bare soil. This has implications for pasture yields since grasses have a higher biomass per unit area compared to sedges in alpine meadows.

In grassland areas subject to degradation caused by overgrazing such as the Maqu grasslands, excess livestock could be removed in order to balance available forage and animal numbers. As the number of animals owned by a herder family represents wealth, income, lifestyle, and culture, reducing livestock numbers is problematic and some form of compensation is required to encourage change. Willingness to accept compensation (WTA) was assessed with the use of contingent valuation (CV) methodology to estimate the value that herder families place on the livestock numbers that lead to overgrazing. The minimum acceptable compensation was estimated as 3 717 RMB (~$555) per head of cattle and 503 RMB (~$75) per head of sheep at 2005 prices. The total compensation required for herder families in Maqu was estimated to be between 2.5310 8 RMB and 3.7310 8 RMB at 2005 prices to reduce stocking to levels considered sustainable based on an estimate of 5310 5 sheep overgrazing equivalents in 2006. Resumen Las aéreas de pastizal está n sujetas a degradación por el pastoreo como en los pastizales de Maqu, el exceso de ganado podría ser removido con el fin de balancear la disponibilidad de forraje y el número de animales. Cómo el número de animales en posesión de una familia representa riqueza, ingreso, estilo de vida y cultura, la reducción del número de animales es un problema y una forma de compensación se requiere para llevar a cabo es cambio. La Disposición a Aceptar una Compensación (DAC) fue evaluada usando la metodología de Valuación Contingente (VC) para estimar el valor que el hato familiar tiene en el número de animales que provocan el sobrepastoreo. La compensación mínima aceptada fue estimada en 3 717 RMB (~$555) por cabeza de bovino y de 503 RMB (~$75) por cabeza de oveja a precios de 2005. La compensacion total requerida por hato familiar en Maqu fue estimada entre 2.5310 8 RMB y 3.7310 8 RMB a precios de 2005 para reducir la carga animal a niveles considerados sostenibles basados en una estimación de 5310 5 sobrepastoreo de ovejas equivalente en 2006.
