“…These results coincide with those of reference [80] reported for M. perezfarrerae (64%) and M. sharpii (73%) with the mechanical scarification treatment (i.e., the seeds are placed in purified water and then the aril is manually removed). This treatment also proved to be effective with 90-100% germination in seeds of M. dealbata [74] and M. champaca (L.) Baill. ex Pierre [88] (73%) under the same treatment [89].…”

“…Magnolia seeds have viability percentages ranging from 50-100% [74,75]. Different studies have shown a low percentage of germination because they can present different types of dormancy (including physical, chemical, mechanical, physiological and morphological) [76].…”

“…M. dealbata has ornamental, medicinal, and pharmacological importance (Alonso-Castro et al 2014). Studies conducted on this species have mainly focused on demographic, ecological (Gutierrez and Vovides 1997, Corral-Aguirre and Sánchez-Velásquez 2006, Valladares et al 2006, Velazco-Macías et al 2008, Sánchez-Velásquez and Pineda-López 2010) and pharmacological (Martínez et al 2006, Domínguez et al 2009, Flores-Estévez et al 2013, Alonso-Castro et al 2014 aspects, as well as on in vitro propagation (Mata-Rosas et al 2006). These latter authors established a micropropagation protocol via somatic embryogenesis and suggested its use for propagation, conservation, and sustainable use.…”

“…This somewhat paradox finding gives rise to questions about the persistence mechanisms and the nature of the disturbance affinity. Knowledge of the persistence mechanisms is fundamental for conservation management recommendations (Corral-Aguirre and Sanchez-Velasquez, 2006;Farnsworth, 2007). Adult J. atratus plants produce non-dormant seeds in large numbers that may be distributed by water during floods (K. Alsleben and M. Burkart, unpublished data).…”
