Seed dressing with mefenpyr-diethyl as a safener for mesosulfuron-methyl application in wheat: The evaluation and mechanisms

Abstract: Mesosulfuron-methyl is always applied by foliar spraying in combination with the safener mefenpyr-diethyl to avoid phytotoxicity on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars. However, it was observed that the tolerance of Tausch’s goatgrass (Aegilops tauschii Coss.) to mesosulfuron-methyl significantly increased in the presence of mefenpyr-diethyl by performing bioassay. This confirmed phenomenon may lead to overuse of mesosulfuron-methyl and weed resistance evolution in field conditions. Therefore, we tested the… Show more

“…UGTs, the most common glycosyltransferase in plant metabolic detoxification, inactivate toxic compounds by glycosylation modification of various functional groups in herbicide molecules, storing them as inactive coupling. Glycosylated metabolites increase polarity and reduce toxicity and are more easily transported to the vacuole for isolation and breakdown from xenobiotics. , Safeners enhance the glycosylation of herbicides in protected plants from herbicide toxicity. , The importance of UGT72B1 was investigated in the degradation of exogenous compounds in A. thaliana by gene knockout. It was shown in the results that the uptake and metabolism rate of 3,4-dichloroaniline was significantly reduced in the A. thaliana mutant obtained when knocking out UGT72B1 .…”

“…(3) Control of malignant weeds in crop fields: In the current production, the herbicide mesosulfuron–methyl is mainly used to control Aegilops tauschii in wheat fields, and it is often used in combination with the safener mefenpyr–diethyl [ 42 ]. However, Yuan et al [ 43 ] found that the tolerance of Aegilops tauschii to mesosulfuron–methyl was significantly increased in the presence of mefenpyr–diethyl by performing a bioassay, and they proposed that seed dressing with mefenpyr–diethyl could replace spraying to improve the resistance of wheat to mesosulfuron–methyl and enhance the control effect on Aegilops tauschii .…”
