Seed characteristics and germination properties of fourGarcinia(Clusiaceae) fruit species

Abstract: Introduction. Seeds from Garcinia species are recalcitrant, which do not survive dessication and cold temperature. This poses a significant challenge for their long-term preservation, and hence more research is needed to understand the biology of such seeds. Materials and methods. Seeds from three under-investigated Garcinia species, namely G. atroviridis, G. hombroniana and G. prainiana, as well as the economically important mangosteen (G. mangostana), were studied using histochemical tests and microscopy tec… Show more

“…Seeds are reported to show dormancy owing to an impermeable seed testa similar with other Garcinia species (Anto et al., 2018 ; Malik et al., 2005 ). There are no differentiated embryos, endosperm, or embryonic axis in seeds of G. xanthochymus similar with other Garcinia species (Figure 1 ; Malik et al., 2005 ; Noor et al., 2016 ).…”

“…However, the adventitious roots arising at the plumular end develop into main root system for the rest of plant life. Such phenomenon has been reported in a number of Garcinia species such as G. gummi-gutta, G. indica, G. xanthochymus, G. mangostana, G. prainiana, G. atroviridis and G. hombroniana (Joshi et al, 2006;Malik et al, 2005;Normah et al, 2016). Recently, we have reported occurrence of this phenomenon in another endemic species of these Islands i.e.…”

“…Additionally, these methods are dependent on the availability of rootstock for grafting and seasonality. Therefore, the propagation of the Garcinia species is through seeds, however, seeds are recalcitrant and they do not survive desiccation or cold temperatures [20]. Additionally, Garcinia seeds exhibit a dormancy that can persist for several months [21].…”
