Seed biometric parameters in oil palm accessions from a Brazilian germplasm bank

Abstract: -The objective of this work was to evaluate the morphological diversity of oil palm seeds and to cluster the accessions according to their morphological characteristics. Forty-one accessions from the oil palm germplasm bank of Embrapa Amazônia Ocidental were evaluated -18 of Elaeis oleifera and 23 of E. guineensis. The groups were formed based on morphological characteristics, by principal component analysis. In E. oleifera, four groups were formed, tied to their region of origin, but with significant morpholo… Show more

“…The seeds had a mean length of 14.15 mm, apical diameter of 10.12 mm, basal diameter of 10.75 mm, and 0.93 g of fresh matter (Table 1). These measurements are near those of another palm tree of the same genus, Elaeis guineensis, which had mean diameter of 0.93 mm and weight of 0.99 g -mean values observed by Camillo et al (2014) upon analyzing the biometry of seeds from eighteen bunches from different plants.…”

“…-frond production; PCS (cm 2 ) -petiole cross section; RL (m) -rachis length; LAI -leaf area index; FDW (kg) -frond dry weight. percentage of variation contributed by the first two components compared to Camillo et al (2014), who reported a total variability of 68.80% for the first two components of Brazil's E. oleifera germplasm. High phenotypic variability was observed on traits such as rachis length, height and fruit weight in E. oleifera (Rey et al, 2004;Rios et al, 2011).…”
