Seed banking of Polish endangered plants – the FlorNatur Project

Abstract: Among the 2750 species of the Polish vascular flora, about 500 species are threatened with extinction and 430 of them are strictly protected by national law. The FlorNatur project for the ex situ conservation of the most endangered species was started in 2009. The aim of the project is to collect seeds of 61 species from 161 sites in eastern Poland and store them in the Seed Bank of the Polish Academy of Sciences Botanical Garden -Center for Biological Diversity Conservation in WarsawPowsin. “…Also, ex situ conservation measures need to be undertaken to preserve this new identified pool of species variability. As ex situ conservation measure we suggest collection of mature seeds and preservation in seed bank, following the Polish example (Puchalski et al 2014). Another efficient conservation measure could be cultivation in botanical gardens, parks, private gardens, etc., the species being very decorative, fragrant and easy to grow (Cullen et al 2011).…”

“…Long-term seed storage methods are based on standardized protocols developed by botanical gardens worldwide in cooperation with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. However, nearly all protocol steps have been re-optimized for many species with the knowledge of dormancy breaking and freezing tolerance of the seeds (Niemczyk & Puchalski, 2015;Puchalski et al, 2014). A germination test was performed for each set of seeds collected in the field and delivered to the seed bank before storage in LN and aer 15-20 years of cryopreservation for controlled seed samples.…”

“…It aims not only at preserving the natural populations in situ but also at developing appropriate techniques for ex situ preservation (creation of a sterile tissue culture, appropriate storage of seeds in seed banks, experimental germination tests and cultivation in order to identify the critical factors for seedling growth). The other countries of Central Europe suggested a similar approach to protect this species, although without the official funded conservation programs (e.g., Kucharczyk, 2007;Puchalski et al, 2014;Manole et al, 2015).…”
