Sediments vs. Historical narratives: The use of soil magnetic properties to evaluate the existence of a historical fire in an 18th century Spanish fort (Patagonia, Argentina)

Abstract: The present work aims to evaluate if sediments from the Spanish fort Fuerte San José (1779-1810 CE) located in Península Valdés, Province of Chubut, Argentina, show signs that could be attributed to the documented fire caused by native populations in 1810 CE. Three different magnetic signatures indicative of thermoalteration were assessed in raw and experimental heated samples: the presence of superparamagnetic minerals, the existence of reversibility on thermomagnetic curves and further relative changes conce… Show more

“…Magnetic characteristics are frequently used in pedological (e.g., Blundell et al, 2009; Clement et al, 2011; Dearing et al, 1996), paleopedological (e.g., Kravchinsky et al, 2008; Kukla, 1987; Maher, 1998), and geoarchaeological (e.g., Crowther, 2003; Lowe et al, 2016; Ozán et al, 2020; Wang et al, 2010) studies. The values of magnetic parameters depend on the concentration of iron‐bearing magnetic minerals, their grain size, and mineralogical composition (Maher, 1998).…”
