Sedimentological characteristics and facies of the evaporite‐bearing Kirmir Formation (Neogene), Beypazari Basin, central Anatolia, Turkey

Abstract: A thick sedimentary sequence comprising fluvial, lacustrine and volcano‐sedimentary rocks is present in the Neogene Beypazari Basin, central Anatolia. These units display considerable lateral facies variation and interfinger with alkaline volcanic rocks along the north‐eastern margin of the basin. The uppermost Miocene Kirmir Formation contains numerous evaporite horizons. The evaporite sequence is up to 250 m thick and may be divided into four lithofacies. In ascending stratigraphical order these are: (1) gyp… Show more

“…Recently, several papers dealing with the industrial minerals such as trona and bituminous shale were published (Helvaci 2001;Onal et al 2004Onal et al , 2006. Also the lithofacies of the Gurun Formation is interpreted as playa-lake type deposits similar to that of Eugster and Surdam (1973), Yagmurlu and Helvaci, (1994), Helvacl (1998) and Yarol et al (2005). Playa-lake deposition of the Green River Formation has been discussed and supported by various workers (Eugster and Hardie 1975;Surdam and Wolfbauer 1975;Lundell and Surdam 1975;Surdam and Stanley 1979).…”

“…The pluton is younger than the Triassic Tepeköy metamorphic unit into which it intruded and older than the Paleocene-Eocene deposits located unconformably above it (Göncüoğlu et al, 2000;Okay et al, 1996;Sayıt & Göncüoğlu, 2013;Yağmurlu & Helvacı, 1994). K-Ar hornblende ages are Late Cretaceous (82.9 ± 1.8, 79.4 ± 4.4, 77.7 ± 4.5 Ma) (Delaloye & Bingöl, 2000).…”
