The time-course association of soil physicochemical properties and fate of CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) is not well understood. This study for the first time investigated the dissolution and retention of CeO 2 NPs (<25 nm) during soil short-term (6 h) and long-term (30 d) aging processes with dynamic redox conditions. Under the additional reductant-induced initial reductive condition, theoretically, up to 220‰ of Ce(IV) was temporarily reductively dissolved within 10 min, accompanied by a slow retention process (180 min) of Ce species in soil solutions. Conversely, the dissolution and slow retention of Ce species were not significant in soil solutions without added reductant. Xray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) shows that most of Ce species were present as Ce(IV) (94.0%−97.8%) in all soils after a long-term aging process. These results indicate that the soil dynamic redox conditions induced by oxidant/reductant intrinsically determined the different time-course dissolution and retention of CeO 2 NPs, highlighting the occasional reductive condition in soil solution that may contribute to the migration and diffusion of Ce species. The time-course study should be also adopted to develop a comprehensive understanding of the nano-soil interactions.

Runoff plots are widely used worldwide to monitor water and soil losses. Sediment concentration in runoff collection tank is measured by stirring-sampling procedure, but this method may produce high measurement error due to the uneven mixing of collected sediments with water and soil particle deposition. This study aimed to identify the relationship between actual and measured sediment concentrations, so as to estimate the systematic error of sediment concentration measurement from runoff collection tank by traditional stirring-sampling procedure and the possibility to eliminate it. Four major soils including black soil, silt loess, clay loess, and purple soil in China were used to determine the correlation between the measured and designed sediment concentrations in laboratory.

Extraction optimization is very important for the quality of humic acid (HA). In this study, actived HA (HA b ) was extracted from danty via catalytic oxidation using birnessite as a catalyst and H 2 O 2 as an oxidant. Single-factor experiments and the response surface method were used to optimize the acidic functional group content of HA b . It was found that the maximum acidic functional group content of HA b can be achieved when danty-crushing time, H 2 O 2 concentration, and birnessite dose were 105.7 min, 20, and 2%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectra showed that HA b had more surface functional groups than commercial HA (HA c ) and HA extracted using the traditional method of the International Humic Substances Society (HA I ). In addition, acidic functional group titration showed that HA b had 84.3% more acidic functional groups and 118.9% more carboxyl groups than HA I . Additionally, HA b had the greatest effect on promoting the dissolution of carbonate and bicarbonate, promoting the settlement of calcaline alkaline soil, and improving the germination rate of wheat seeds under saline and alkaline stress. This study provides a basis for the efficient extraction of active HA with rich functional groups and its application in agriculture and many other fields.
