RESUMEN.Las tendencias espaciales de los parámetros texturales (tamaño medio de grano, selección y asimetría) en Bahía Magdalena, Baja California Sur, México, se calcularon a partir de 58 estaciones de muestreo, con la finalidad de inferir la trayectoria de los vectores residuales de transporte de sedimentos. Los análisis de las tendencias espaciales y de componentes principales aplicados a los parámetros texturales indicaron que el sedimento, con una buena selección, está asociado con arenas finas a muy finas. Los vectores residuales de transporte sugieren la presencia de dos giros en la dispersión de material clástico: (1) giro ciclónico en la parte central y profunda, y (2) giro anticiclónico en la región sureste de la bahía. Las trayectorias de las partículas sedimentarias tienen una excelente correlación con las corrientes residuales de marea dentro de la Bahía Magdalena. Sediment transport patterns in Magdalena Bay, Baja California Sur, Mexico, inferred from grain-size trendsABSTRACT. The grain-size trend analysis (grain size, sorting asymmetry) was determined at 58 stations in order to infer the residual vectors of sediment transport in Magdalena Bay, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Grain-size trend analysis and principal components analysis were applied to textural sediment parameters. The results indicated that well-sorted sediment is associated with fine to very fine sand. The residual vector transport suggests the presence of two gyres in the dispersion of clastic material: (1) acyclone-ic gyre in the deeper, central part and (2) an anticyclone-ic gyre in the southeast part of the bay. The sediment transport pattern is highly correlated with the residual tidal currents in Magdalena Bay.

An application of the grain size trend analysis (GSTA) is used in an exploratory approach to characterize sediment transport on Camposoto beach (Cádiz, SW Spain). In May 2009 the mesotidal beach showed a well-developed swash bar on the upper foreshore, which was associated with fair-weather conditions prevailing just before and during the field survey. The results were tested by means of an autocorrelation statistical test (index I of Moran). Two sedimentological trends were recognized, i.e. development towards finer, better sorted and more negatively skewed sediment (FB-), and towards finer, better sorted and less negatively or more positively skewed sediment (FB+). Both vector fields were compared with results obtained from more classical approaches (sand tracers, microtopography and current measurements). This revealed that both trends can be considered as realistic, the FB+ trend being identified for the first time in a beach environment. The data demonstrate that, on the well-developed swash bar, sediment transported onshore becomes both finer and better sorted towards the coast. On the lower foreshore, which exhibits a steeper slope produced by breaking waves, the higherenergy processes winnow out finer particles and thereby produce negatively skewed grain-size distributions. The upper foreshore, which has a flatter and smoother slope, is controlled by lower-energy swash-backwash and overwash processes. As a result, the skewness of the grain-size distributions evolves towards less negative or more positive values. The skewness parameter appears to be distributed as a function of the beach slope and, thus, reflects variations in hydrodynamic energy. This has novel implications for coastal management.

The surface erosion area in the Yangtze River basin increased from 364×10 3 km 2 in the 1950s to 707×10 3 km 2 in 2001 due to a great increase in population. Based on the regression relationship between surface erosion area and population, the surface erosion area was predicted to be about 280×103 km 2 at the beginning of the 20 th century. The sediment yield, which increased by about 30% during the first six decades of the 20 th century, was closely related to the surface erosion area in this river basin. The Yangtze annual suspended sediment flux into the estuary was about 395×106 t a -1 at the beginning of the century, and this gradually increased to an average of 509×10 6 t a -1 in the 1960s. The increase in the suspended sediment flux into the estuary was accelerated in the 1950s and the 1960s due to the rapid increase in population and land use immediately after the Second World War and the Liberation War. After the riverine suspended sediment flux reached its maximum in the 1960s, it decreased to <206×10 6 t a -1 in 2003. Construction of dams was found to be the principal cause for this decreasing trend because, during the same period, (a) the riverine water discharge did not show a decreasing trend, (b) water diversion was not influential and (c) sedimentation in lakes and canals of the middle and lower reaches did not increase. The total storage capacity of reservoirs has increased dramatically over the past half century. The amount of sediment trapped in reservoirs has increased to more than half a billion t a -1 . As a result, the suspended sediment flux into the estuary dramatically decreased, even though the sediment yield from many areas of the basin increased in recent decades. Human activities gradually increased the suspended sediment flux into the estuary before the 1960s and then rapidly decreased it. The last century was a period when the Yangtze suspended sediment flux into the estuary was dramatically affected by human activities.
