Sediment Transport and Water Flow Resistance in Alluvial River Channels: Modified Model of Transport of Non-Uniform Grain-Size Sediments

Abstract: The paper presents recommendations for using the results obtained in sediment transport simulation and modeling of channel deformations in rivers. This work relates to the issues of empirical modeling of the water flow characteristics in natural riverbeds with a movable bottom (alluvial channels) which are extremely complex. The study shows that in the simulation of sediment transport and calculation of channel deformations in the rivers, it is expedient to use the calculation dependences of Chézy’s coefficien… Show more

“…During the pre‐ and post‐flood periods, the ambient temperature was 22–30°C and the discharge rate ranged between 98 and 2,000 m 3 /s. Based on the discharge rates, the flow velocities were estimated at 0.04–0.8 m/s, and the riverbed shear stresses were estimated at 0.009–0.36 N/m 2 using the Manning‐Strickler equation for the sand‐clay mixed riverbed (Gladkov et al., 2021; Soulsby, 1997). The warm water temperature provided a favorable environment for algal growth.…”

“…On this basis, as a result of the hydraulic calculations performed in the work, an assessment of the impact of the projected quarry on the flow kinematics and channel deformations in the immediate vicinity of its location is given. The analysis of a field of speeds of a current in a zone of influence of the quarry has allowed to receive an estimation of its influence on navigable conditions and deformations of the right coast [4,5,6].…”

“…Simulations of the hydrodynamic and dynamic changes in the relief of the riverbed were carried out, and the models for accurate calculation of changes in the layer level and the area of deposition and erosion were proposed [44][45][46][47]. In the work [48][49][50], a hydraulic experiment was conducted to study the hydraulic phenomena of the dam, comparing hydraulic surges and flow characteristics.…”
