Sediment pollution in margins of the Lake Guaíba, Southern Brazil

Abstract: Sediments are formed by deposition of organic and inorganic particles on depth of water bodies, being an important role in aquatic ecosystems, including destination and potential source of essential nutrients and heavy metals, which may be toxic for living organisms. The Lake Guaíba supplies water for approximately two million people and it is located in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the sediment pollution in the margins of… Show more

“…Moreover, the comparison of metal concentrations between the evaluated section of the Dilúvio Stream (AD) and two "before" (Ga) and two "after" (Gd) sites closest to the outflow (De Andrade et al, 2018) was performed by comparing the data with box-plot and submitting to statistical analysis of Kruskal-Wallis at 5% significance in completely randomized analyses with different numbers of repetitions.…”

“…These issues increase the deposition and contamination rates of road dust that flow to surface water bodies by runoff carrying metals such as Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, and Ni (Sharley et al, 2016;Zhang et al, 2016). Nevertheless, Cr is also associated with atmospheric deposition near industrial areas (Sharley et al, 2016), with an historical use in leather and footwear industries in the Lake Guaíba drainage basin (De Andrade et al, 2018).…”

“…Water pollution in Lake Guaíba's watershed has been noted since the end of 1950 (Freitas, 1962;Roessler, 2005), persisting for decades as a public perception. Nowadays, the waters have multiples uses: as water supply, sewage dilution, navigation, as well as fishing (Andrade et al, 2018).…”

“…The main activities affecting this region consists of disorderly housing occupation of the areas along the Santa Bárbara stream, release of untreated domestic and industrial sewage and disposal of urban solid waste. Andrade et al (2018) evaluating sediment pollution in the margins of the Lake Guaíba (RS), also in Southern Brazil, detected that the water pollution by heavy metals and nutrients were derived from urban streams that flows into the lake. The authors also used a multivariate analysis to support their results and thus help to identify pollutants sources and recommended that public actions should focus in the streams that flow into the Lake Guaíba, in order to solve this environmental issue.…”
