Sediment Distribution Based on Grain Size Analyses in Weda Bay, Northern Maluku

Abstract: An integrated study of sediment distribution was conducted in Weda Bay Keywords: current, the Weda Bay expedition, granulometric, grain size, sediment distribution ABSTRAKStudi sebaran sedimen yang dilakukan secara terpadu di Teluk Weda, Maluku Utara ditujukan untuk memberikan gambaran proses transportasi dan pengendapan sedimen berdasarkan distribusi ukuran butir sedimen. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada ekspedisi Weda dengan menggunakan kapal riset "Baruna Jaya VII" yang dilaksanakan pada tanggal 13 -22 Maret 2… Show more

“…Zones 1 and 2 have the same type of substrate, dominated by mud and a little sand, while zone 3 is dominated by sand which has a grain size larger than mud. This is in accordance that the closer to the coast or the sea, the finer the grain size obtained [19]. This indicates that the sediment source has undergone a transportation process until it finally gets deposited in each zone [20].…”

“…This result greatly correlates with the previous study in the Sumba Island (Putra and Nugroho, 2017) and Tarakan sub-basin . However the study in the Weda Bay shows a different result (Nugroho and Basit, 2014), where the sediment is coarser towards the deeper sea. This may be caused by complex currents in the Weda Bay.…”

“…Bed-load transport will be experienced by the coarser fraction in the form of rolling, sliding, creeping, and saltation. However, the finer fraction undergoes transportation in the form of suspendedload carried sufficiently far within the stream, eventually settling in the deposition environment (Nugroho & Basit, 2014). The sedimentary mechanism in Sayung waters depends on estuaries, where tidal current-driven transport is predominant.…”
