Mangrove ecosystem has a strategic function as a buffer for coastal areas, marine conservation, mitigates climate change and global warming. Bangka Belitung is an archipelagic province with many coastal areas, including mangrove ecosystems. This study aims to determine the quality of the mangrove ecosystem by analyzing the structure, composition, and health index of mangroves in the mangrove forest ecosystem in Baskara Bakti Village, Central Bangka Regency. Data were collected through observations at several sampling points used to analyze species composition, vegetation community structure, and environmental physicochemical conditions using stratified random sampling with an observation plot size of 10 m x 10 m and canopy cover determination using the hemispherical photography method. The study results show that the composition of mangrove vegetation in the study area consisted of 5 true mangrove species and 6 associated mangrove species. Rhizophora apiculata is the species with the highest Important Value Index of 91.87%. The mangrove community showed a good health condition with an average value of 50.41%. Environmental parameters that directly influence the mangrove forest ecosystem include temperature, water pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and salinity. Planting and enrichment of mangrove species need to conserve sustainable mangrove ecosystems.

The Simeulue sub-basin is situated off north-western Sumatra between the outer arc and the mainlands. The sediment and geochemical element characteristics of basins are the important sedimentology variables to recognize the process of sediment deposition. However, the characteristics of the sediment and the geochemical elements in the Simeulue subbasin have not been well explained. This study aims to investigate the textural and geochemical elements characteristics of marine sediments and the distribution of these two variables to determine the sedimentary facies in the Simeulue sub-basin. Samples were taken from various depths in the sub-basin and collected during the 2017 Expedition of “Widya Nusantara” by using the “Baruna Jaya VIII” Research Vessel. The grain size trend analysis showed that the middle part of the basin was dominated by mud, while the edge of the basin near the island (mainland) was mostly dominated by coarser sediments. A geochemical element analysis was performed on each sample to observe the origin of the sediments. The results of these two analyses were subjected to multivariate statistics. This approach was selected because it is appropriate for determining the sedimentary facies and the depositional environments. Based on the multivariate analysis, the sedimentary facies in the Simeulue sub-basin was divided into five facies with similar sediment characteristics and depositional environments. These facies were deposited in the environment with low to medium energy.

An over whelming erosion occurred in Sayung waters is related to sedimentary processes. That is why the deeper determination of sediment characteristics through direct survey and acoustic data retrieval is crucial. Several previous related studies had been conducted revealing the rate and model of sedimentation. This study aimed to describe the sedimentary processes according to its features and deposition. In this study, we conducted a grab-sampling, bathymetry surveys and also hydrodynamical model. Grain size analysis was employed to observe the characteristics of sediment and its deposition environment. At the same time, we applied dual-frequency bathymetry data for estimating sediment thickness which reflects the accumulation sediment over Sayung waters. We found that sediment texture varies from sand to clay, while coarse sediment fraction is dominant in the western part. Near the coastline area of Sayung waters reflecting the more potent transport mechanism in the deposition environment, proven by the less-accumulated sediment from 0-2.5 km from the coastline. In sea-ward regions, we observed the finer sediment fraction, showing that the low-transport mechanism takes place. The topographical alteration has intensively occurred at 2.5-3.2 km from the coastline. Tidal current has an essential role in inducing local transport whereby the speed varies ranging from 0-0.14 m/s, other than that, the more substantial current features have observed in Surodadi and Bedono coast moving perpendicularly toward the beach. In contrast, in the southern Sayung waters, the current profiles tend to be weak inducing higher sedimentation. Besides, the emergence of the sandbar has a role in reflecting sediment texture predomination in Sayung waters.
