Sediment Concentrations from Intensively Prepared Wetland Sites¹

Abstract: Suspended sediment concentrations were measured in water draining from a 5,900-acre Carolina bay undergoing conversion to loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations. Samples were collected during the first storm-flow event of each month between January 1981 and December 1982 from subwatersheds involved in some of several phases of conversion. Suspended sediment concentration in water leaving the bay averaged only 16 mg/1 for 13 storms. Road erosion and ditch installation produced the highest suspended sediment… Show more

“…Most erosion resulting from forestry is from poorly constructed and maintained roads, especially if traffic moves perpendicular to drainage ditches or natural contours of the land (Askew and Williams 1984;Yoho 1980). Sandy uplands soils are susceptible to gully erosion (Figure 15), which channels water movement and carries the sandy soils into lower-lying areas (J. Murian, pers.…”

“…Most erosion from forestry results from poorly constructed and maintained roads, especially if traffic moves perpendicular to drainage ditches or natural contours of the land (Yoho 1980;Askew and Williams 1984). It is possible that similar effects occur as a result of military vehicle movement, since careful road placement and maintenance are not the highest prioirities in battlefield simulation exercises.…”

“…The ecosystem is altered but continues to meet jurisdictional wetland criteria; t therefore, the practice is exempt from permit requirements under the Clean Water Act [29]. Some lands converted to pine plantations produce remarkably high water quality [30]. On mineral soils, the major problem appears to arise from increased sediment in ditches soon after construction and from surface material added to logging roads [30,31].…”
