The aim of this study is to describe the sedimentary evolution occurred during the last 200-years in the middle Capibaribe Estuary by mean of the sedimentary analysis (magnetic susceptibility, grain size, calcium carbonate, total organic matter-TOM) and geochemical parameters (sedimentation rates, heavy metal concentrations, enrichment and contamination factor) along a core. The core recorded four units and the measured sedimentation rate was 0.52 cm cm•y −1 . The first unit, dating before 1812, showed environmental characteristics of mangrove with predominance of fine sediments, high total organic matter percentages and heavy metal concentrations probably from natural sources. The second unit, from 1812 to 1937, showed a slight increase in sand percentages and decrease in fine fraction, TOM contents and heavy metals concentrations. These characteristics may be associated with the urban expansion processes and the presence of monoculture of sugar cane occurred in the middle Capibaribe Estuary. The third unit, from 1937 to 2004, showed the highest sand percentages of the core, characterizing a unit exclusively of sand with low fine fractions percentages, total organic matter contents and heavy metals concentrations. This unit represented the intensification of the urban processes expansion of Recife City. The fourth unit showed increases in fine fraction sedimentation, TOM contents and heavy metals concentrations. This new change in sedimentation probably is consequence of rebirth of marginal estuarine banks by mangrove vegetation, due to environmental projects carried out by Recife Prefecture in the early 2000's. It was not possible to register the anthropic contamination to middle estuary area probably due to the Barreiras Formation influences in the metal concentration records, masking the anthropic contamination inputs in estuarine region. Although, lead and arsenic showing an enrichment level indicating anthropic contamination.

As human activities have intensified along tropical coastlines, the anthropic influence on adjacent coral reefs has become increasingly deleterious. Changes in land use generally degrade water quality, but controversy persists over the degree to which reduced water quality affects the ecology of reef communities. We cored reef frameworks at 4 sites in Bahía Almirante, a semi-enclosed, coastal lagoon in northwestern Panamá, to explore the historical relationship between turnover in coral-species dominance and terrigenous input. The coral constituents of the cores were analyzed in tandem with lignin-phenol concentrations. Chronologies and sedimentation rates were determined from 210 Pb profiles in the cores. Increased terrigenous input from agricultural development and expansion of the human population degraded water quality in Bahía Almirante over the last century. Documented episodes of heavy rainfall after 1970 accelerated a phase shift from dominance by branching corals of the genus Porites to dominance by the lettuce coral Agaricia tenuifolia at water depths of 5 to 10 m by increasing runoff, increasing sediment and nutrient loads, and lowering light levels. The phase shift in coral dominance was unprecedented on a millennial time scale and the degree to which it occurred varied along a gradient of terrigenous input to the Bahía.

Erosion on coral reefs produces fragments of the constructor organisms that are scattered all around, thus enlarging the reef boundaries. Statistical modelling approach was used to investigate whether the Polychaeta community around Sebastião Gomes reef (Abrolhos Bank, Brazil) is influenced equally by sediment characteristics and/or by position related to the reef, that are variables related to the terrigenous input influence. In July 2007, a period dominated by winds that resuspend fine sediment from the land to coastal reefs, sediment samples were taken on four transects perpendicular to the reef (S, W, N and E) and a total of 121 species of polychaetes were recorded. The most abundant species was the carnivorous Goniadides carolinae and the model selected for it approximates to the best models fitted for both total macrofauna and polychaete abundance. These models represented higher abundance in coarse carbonate sediments on windward reef faces, where there is almost no terrigenous sediment. On the other hand, the Polychaeta richness did not depend on the transects. Sebastião Gomes reef is one of the many coastal reefs from Abrolhos Bank, whose healthy is probably in danger because of the increase of mud related to human activities, as deforestation and, recently, mining waste. Fragmentos dos recifes de coral constituem parte do sedimento ao redor dos mesmos, ampliando os limites do recife. Modelos estatísticos foram criados para investigar se a comunidade de poliquetas ao redor do recife Sebastião Gomes (Banco dos Abrolhos, Brasil) é influenciada pelas características do sedimento e/ ou pela posição ao redor do recife, que são variáveis relacionadas à influência do aporte terrígeno. Em julho de 2007, período dominado por ventos que ressuspendem o sedimento fino da costa para os recifes, amostras de sedimento foram coletadas em quatro transectos perpendiculares ao recife (S, O, N e L). A espécie de poliqueta mais abundante foi o carnívoro Goniadides carolinae e o modelo selecionado para descrever a distribuição desta espécie foi muito semelhante aos ajustados tanto para a abundância de macrofauna quanto de poliquetas. Estes modelos apresentaram alta abundância em sedimentos carbonáticos grossos na face do recife exposta aos ventos, onde quase não há sedimento terrígeno. Por outro lado, a riqueza de poliquetas não foi influenciada pela posição dos transectos. Sebastião Gomes é um dos muitos recifes costeiros do Banco dos Abrolhos, cuja saúde está prejudicada devido ao aumento de lama relacionada a atividades humanas, como desmatamento e, recentemente, rejeitos da mineração.
