Sedentary behaviour and physical activity in bronchiectasis: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: BackgroundThe impact of bronchiectasis on sedentary behaviour and physical activity is unknown. It is important to explore this to identify the need for physical activity interventions and how to tailor interventions to this patient population. We aimed to explore the patterns and correlates of sedentary behaviour and physical activity in bronchiectasis.MethodsPhysical activity was assessed in 63 patients with bronchiectasis using an ActiGraph GT3X+ accelerometer over seven days. Patients completed: questionna… Show more

“…Additional methods and results from the primary study which relates to patterns correlates of sedentary behaviour and physical activity have been published previously [15]. Participants who agreed to take part in the study attended a clinical visit (Visit 1) where they provided baseline demographics; disease severity was estimated using the Bronchiectasis Severity Index [16].…”

“…212 Only 11% of participants met the recommended physical activity guidelines of ≥150 min of at least moderate activity per week. 213 There are four randomised controlled trials (RCTs) which investigate the effects of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in bronchiectasis.…”

“…10 In brief, subjects with bronchiectasis were recruited from 3 hospitals in Northern Ireland. Inclusion criteria were: age Ն18 y, diagnosis of bronchiectasis confirmed either by computed tomography or high-resolution computed tomography Յ10-pack-year smoking history, clinical stability (no pulmonary exacerbation), no significant change in symptoms or medication in the last 4 weeks and sputum bacteriology completed over the past 3 months.…”

“…In brief, few individuals with bronchiectasis met the recommended physical activity guidelines, with many demonstrating largely inactive lifestyles. 10 No physical activity interventions have been conducted in individuals with bronchiectasis, highlighting the need for development of physical activity interventions that are tailored to this group.…”
