Sedentary Behavior in Older Patients before and after Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract: Objective: To compare the habitual sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) of older hip osteoarthritis patients before and after elective arthroplasty. Methods: SB, PA and joint-specific disability of 16 patients (68.9 ± 6.8 years) were assessed by accelerometry and questionnaires before and 9 months after arthroplasty. Results: All patients reported substantial postoperative improvements of their joint-related complaints (p ≤ 0.001). Accelerometry showed changes in neither daily SB (10–60 min seden… Show more

“…Indeed, it has recently been shown that OA patient-partner dyads differ significantly from control couples in terms of PA. 21 With regard to SB, it was even found that both partners and controls were in fact at the same level as the OA patients, which could be attributed to the widespread sedentary lifestyle in today’s society. 22 , 23 …”

“…This finding was explained with the activity level of the patients. However, notably aseptic loosening and instability were no major problems in this series, possibly due to the relatively high patient age at surgery which is often associated with a lower activity level [19]. As the median time to revision surgery was less than three years in the present cohort, it is possible that some patients may have failed due to infection before instability could have become a problem.…”

“…Reduced PA, as inevitably occurs in the context of musculoskeletal diseases, consequently poses an increased risk for morbidity and mortality not only to patients, but also to their partners—an aspect that has received little attention so far. OA patients, whose daily lives are typically characterized by long periods of sitting [ 37 ], short walking distances, and rare MVPA [ 6 ], should be highlighted in this context. Using accelerometry, it has already been shown that the couple-specific deviation in everyday PA is significantly smaller in couples consisting of OA patients and their spouses than in control couples [ 19 ].…”
