Abstract.— The present study investigated the use of benzocaine as an anesthetic for juvenile Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui). In the first experiment, fish were exposed to various doses of benzocaine for 10 min at 24 C. The second experiment examined the effects of duration of exposure to 100 mg/L of benzocaine. In the third experiment, fish were exposed to 100 mg/L at temperatures of 24, 27, and 30 C. Benzocaine concentrations of 100–150 mg/L were considered ideal for quickly inducing total immobilization and fast recovery. Fish exposed to 350 mg/L benzocaine exhibited 30% mortality. No changes in hemat‐ocrit were recorded in fish exposed to different concentrations of benzocaine. Plasma glucose increased significantly when fish were exposed to benzocaine concentrations greater than 200 mg/L. Recovery time after a 30‐min exposure to 100 mg/L benzocaine was significantly greater than after an exposure for 10 and 20 min. No mortality was observed 96 h after exposure to 100 mg/L benzocaine for 10, 20, and 30 min. Dosages in the 100–150 mg/L range were effective for periods of up to 20 min of anesthesia. There was no effect of temperature on the time required for fish to lose equilibrium. However, recovery was significantly faster for fish anesthetized at 30 C. Benzocaine is an effective anesthetic agent for tambaqui juveniles, providing rapid immobilization and rapid recovery. Benzocaine is also less expensive than other available anesthetic compounds.

A radiographic technique was used to determine temperature effects on gastric emptying time in S. niloticus/aureus hybrids. Stomach evacuation times for 30 g fish fed 3% of their body weight were 8.5 h at 30' C, 10.8 h at 25" C and 16.4 h at 20' C. Hence, there was a negative correlation between stomach evacuation time and temperature. The Q,? between 20 and 30' C was calculated to be 1.92. Similar relationships were found for intestinal evacuation and total evacuation.The data were used to estimate maximum daily feed intake levels of fish within the size range studied. Levels for 30 g fish were 8.5% body weight at 30' C, 6.6% at 25" C and 4 4 % at 20' C. However, the optimum feeding regime should take account of the feeding behaviour ofthe animals.

Quantitative aspects of the filter-feeding of the tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, on two species of the blue-green algae -Anabaena cylindrica and Microcystis aeruginosa -were investigated in the laboratory. The ingestion rate of 85mm SL 0. niloticus was best fitted using a linear regression over the range of biovolume concentrations studied (3 x lo6 -3 x lo8 pm3 ml-'). The ingestion rate of 40 mm SL fish gave a curvilinear relationship and was best fitted using a logarithmic regression. For each size class of fish, ingestion rates were higher when fed the larger Anabaena than Microcystis. The results of ingestion and filtration rates are comparable to work on other aquatic suspension feeders and tend to substantiate a universality in the fundamental regulatory mechanism of filter feeding.
