Security Enhancements of the Surveillance Data Exchange Protocol “ASTERIX”

Abstract: The surveillance information are key data for all air navigation service providers which are responsible for the safety of the air passengers and the efficiency of Air Traffic Management system. In this paper, we have focused on the analysis of a protocol used to carry the surveillance information from the sensor to the ATC centre as well as amongst variety of ATM applications inside the ATC centre. As the original ASTERIX protocol has been developed without any security mechanism, it constitutes a major vulne… Show more

“…An antenna transmits CAT-240 messages via UDP multicast, and PPIs subscribe to this feed to receive and display data. From a security perspective, it is important to note that the ASTERIX protocol lacks built-in authentication and encryption features [13], [14].…”

“…As known, the ASTERIX protocol does not offer any security mechanisms to ensure data source authenticity, data integrity, etc. [5] As such, it is trivial to impersonate existing Sensors/Users or modify legitimate messages, once we are on the same network with ARTAS [6].…”
