Secular trend in the sexual maturation of Southern Chinese girls

Abstract: In 1993, a cross-sectional study of sexual maturation of normal Chinese schoolgirls was performed in Hong Kong. The aim of the study was to obtain an up-to-date reference for normal pubertal development in Chinese girls. Breast development was assessed in 3749 girls aged 7-19 y, and pubic hair rating was assessed in 3745 girls. Menstrual status was recorded in 6467 girls over 6 y of age. The median age of onset of puberty as indicated by breast stage II or above was 9.78 (95% CI 9.70-9.85) y. The median age of… Show more

“…They found that the time pattern of sexual maturation was comparable to that of Europeans, with the exception that Asians developed pubic hair later. Huen et al (Huen et al, 1997) published a similar study including 3,749 girls from southern China. They found that, according to the mean values for the individual stages of maturity, the examined girls were among the earliest to reach sexual maturity worldwide.…”

“…Comparative studies on sexual maturation were conducted by Harlan et al (Harlan et al, 1979(Harlan et al, , 1980, Channing-Pearce and Solomon (Channing-Pearce & Solomon, 1987), Wong et al (Wong et al, 1996) and Huen et al (Huen et al, 1997). Between 1966, Harlan et al (Harlan et al, 1979 analysed the sexual development of 6,768 male Americans aged between 12 and 17 years.…”

“…Firstly, although puberty may affect IGFBP-3 or IGF-I concentrations, 14 the pubertal state of the participants was not assessed in this study due to the practical difficulties of doing so in such a large cohort. Nonetheless, given that the median age of puberty in Hong Kong is 11.4 years and 9.8 years in boys and girls, respectively, 40,41 the majority of our participants (mean age of 15.3 + 2.0 and 15.7 + 2.0 years in boys and girls, respectively) were post-pubertal. Secondly, apart from …”

“…40 This frequency of assessment provides reliable measurements of pubertal development, which are similar to the references for normal pubertal development in Chinese boys and girls in Hong Kong. 41,42 Children with infeasible sequences of pubertal stages, such as Tanner stage II before stage I, were excluded (n = 87).…”
