Background Neonatal sepsis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality among neonates in developing countries accounting for 30-50% of total deaths each year. Childhood mortality is often used as broad indicator of the social development or a specific indicator of health conditions of a country. Objectives The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of neonatal sepsis and associated factors among neonates admitted in neonatal intensive care unit at two hospitals in Shashemene town, Ethiopia. Method An institution based cross-sectional study with retrospective document review method was conducted in NICUs of two governmental hospitals in Shashemene town. Sample size was calculated by using single population proportion sample formula and the final sample size was 244. The study subject was selected by using systematic random sampling method, and adopted data collection tool was used. Then the collected data was coded and entered in to SPSS for windows version 20.0 for cleaning, editing, and analysis. Binary and multiple logistic regressions have been used to observe the association between independent variables and dependent variable. Result The overall prevalence of neonatal sepsis in this study was 77.9%. From this 65% and 35% of neonates developed early onset neonatal sepsis and late onset neonatal sepsis, respectively. This study found out that age of neonates, birth asphyxia, and use of oxygen via mask were significantly associated with neonatal sepsis. Conclusion and Recommendation. The most risk factors of neonatal sepsis were identified as age of neonates, birth asphyxia, and use of oxygen via mask strongly associated with prevalence of NS. Based on this results we recommend the concerned body to focus on the prevention of risk factors rather than treating the disease after it occurs.

Background: Neonatal sepsis is one of the primary causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality especially in developing countries. Despite the availability of different preventive interventions, in Kenya, the burden of neonatal sepsis remains critically high. Aim: To determine the prevalence and predictors of neonatal sepsis among newborns admitted at the newborn unit of Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya. Methods: This is a hospital-based, cross-sectional study design carried out among 196 neonates and their mothers at the new born unit of Kenyatta National Hospital. A systematic random sampling technique was employed to select the study subjects. Data on the possible contributing factors of neonatal sepsis was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. Statistical analyses were performed using the statistical package for the Social Sciences (SPSS: version 22). Data were descriptively analyzed into frequencies and proportions. The chi-square test of independence and binary logistic regression were employed to determine associations between the dependent (neonatal sepsis) and various independents variables. A multiple logistic regression model was carried out to determine the variables independently contributed to the occurrence of neonatal sepsis. Results: Our study revealed that the prevalence of neonatal sepsis was 28.6%. Neonates born of single mothers (AOR = 5.454, p = 0.012), mothers with history of UTI (AOR = 2.969, p = 0.013), PROM (AOR = 6.124, p = 0.001) and anaemia (AOR = 3.379, p = 0.010) were at higher risk to develop neonatal sepsis. Prematurity (AOR = 6.402, p < 0.001), low Apgar score at 5 th minutes (AOR = 8.212, p < 0.001) and history of invasive procedure (AOR = 2.464, p = 0.046) were the neonatal factors independently associated with neonatal sepsis. Conclusion and Recommendations: The prevalence of neonatal sepsis in Kenyatta National Hospital is high. BackgroundIschemic stroke is a focal or global cerebral dysfunction of vascular origin; its treatment aims to provide reperfusion. Secretoneurin is a hypoxia-sensitive biomarker found in high concentrations in brain tissue. We aim to determine secretoneurin levels in patients with ischemic stroke, examine how secretoneurin levels change in the mechanical thrombectomy group, and evaluate the correlation with disease severity and prognosis. MethodsTwenty-two patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke in the emergency department underwent mechanical thrombectomy, and twenty healthy volunteers were included in the study. Serum secretoneurin levels were measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Secretoneurin levels were measured at the 0 th hour, 12 th hour, and 5 th day in patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy. ResultsSerum secretoneurin levels were found to be statistically significantly higher in the patient group (7.43 ng/mL) compared to the control group (5.90 ng/mL) (p=0.023). The secretoneurin levels of the patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy were 7.43 ng/mL, 7.04 ng/mL, and 8.65 ng/mL, measured at the 0 th hour, 12 th hour, and 5 th day, respectively, and no significant difference was detected in all three time periods (p=0.142). ConclusionSecretoneurin appears to be a useful biomarker in the diagnosis of stroke. However, it was found that there was no prognostic value in the mechanical thrombectomy group, and it was not correlated with the severity of the disease.
