Secretion rate of dehydroepiandrosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate in benign essential hypertension as compared to normal subjects

Abstract: A study of the secretion rate of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) in normal subjects and patients with benign essential hypertension by a double isotope dilution method showed a fivefold increase in the secretion rate of dehydroepiandrosterone (from 9.8 mg/day ± 3.1 mg/day S.D. to 52.0 mg/day ± 15.5 mg/day S.D.), and a sixfold increase of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate in hypertensive patients (from 10.7 mg/day ± 2.9 mg/day S.D. to 60.7 mg/day ± 18.6 mg/day S.D.). “…Japon. June 1976 There have been numerons reports on various abnormalities in steroid metabolism in essential hypertension (EH) (Cooper et al, 1958;Genest et al, 1960;Vermeulen and Van der Straeten, 1963;Shao et al, 1970;Melby et al,1971;Brown et al, 1972;Melby et al, 1972;Mendelsohn et al, 1972;Nowaczynski et al, 1972 a and b;Sasaki et al, 1972;Sekihara et al, 1973;Grim et al, 1974;Nowaczynski et al, 1975). However, in many of these studies, steroids have not been investigated systematically and also, steroids other than aldosterone have not commanded much attention.…”
