Secretion of byssal threads in Mytilus galloprovincialis: quantitative and qualitative values after spawning stress

Abstract: 8The effect of spawning events of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis on both quantitative and 9 qualitative values of byssus secretion and its associated attachment force was investigated. 10Byssogenesis rates and absorption efficiency values were significantly reduced after spawning 11 of individuals. However, the maintenance of individuals under sub-optimal conditions (lack of 12 microalgae in the diet) for a week caused no effect on thread's number. Surprisingly, 13 attachment force varied within a narrow… Show more

“…The byssal attachment strength measured after re-attachment under laboratory conditions (Lee et al 1990;Dolmer and Svane 1994;Babarro and Reiriz 2010) was much lower than that which was reported in the findings by Leonard et al (1999), and was lower than values measured in the present study. The experimental site at which the present experiment was carried out was a sheltered area of the Oosterschelde.…”

“…Gonadal index was obtained as the proportion of mussel biomass composed of mantle tissue (site of gametogenesis in Mytilus). Wet mantle was dissected from the wet body and, together with the rest of the organs, was freezedried for 48 h. Samples of the mantle and the rest of tissues were weighed to the nearest 0.001 g and gonadal index was calculated as the dry weight of the mantle divided by the whole soft body (sum of the dry weight of the mantle and remaining tissues) (Carrington 2002, Babarro & Fernández Reiriz 2010.…”

“…Threads were hydrolysed in vacuo for 24 h at 110°C and samples were then flash-evaporated at 60°C. A volume of perchloric acid was added to the dry hydrolysed thread material and amino acids were quantified following Babarro & Fernández Reiriz (2010). Determination of amino acids was performed by reverse-phase HPLC of the dabsyl derivatives.…”
