Purpose As recycling is associated with various environmental benefits, it is important that it is encouraged in Malaysia. Taking the disappointingly low recycling rate in Malaysia as its backdrop, the purpose of this paper is to examine recycling intentions and behaviors among micro-entrepreneurs in Kelantan, Malaysia, drawing on the theory of planned behavior. Design/methodology/approach The study adopted a cross-sectional design and stratified random sampling method to select 200 informal micro-entrepreneurs from Kota Bharu, Kelantan; then, quantitative data were collected through structured interviews. For data analysis, this study adopted variance-based structural equation modeling, i.e. PLS–SEM. Findings The findings indicated that environmental awareness had a significant positive effect on micro-entrepreneurs’ attitudes toward the environment. They also confirmed a positive and significant effect of attitude and perceived behavioral control on intention toward recycling and the effect of intention toward recycling on recycling behavior among the study sample. Practical implications Policies and programs focused on environmental awareness could nurture a positive attitude toward the environment, which, together with the capacities and resources available, could significantly influence the adoption of recycling behavior among informal entrepreneurs. Originality/value It is recommended that both public and private environmental protection and socio-economic development organizations combine their efforts to formulate and enforce policies and programs to promote recycling behavior among Malaysian entrepreneurs, which could spread the recycling spirit among all Malaysians.

Environmental education aims to raise individuals who have the necessary environmental knowledge, positive environmental attitudes, and active participation in the solution of environmental problems. It is necessary to use an effective teaching model in environmental education. The study aims comparing the academic success of secondary school students in teaching environmental problems in the light of Karplus's learning cycle model (Inquiry) and Ausubel's meaningful learning model (Direct) in terms of metropolitan-centred students (experimental group) and rural-centred students (control group). In addition, the important thing in questioning is to reveal the relationship of prior knowledge with open-ended questions asked by metropolitan-centred students. In this study, 164 5th-grade students' thoughts on environmental problems, their level of producing solutions, and their academic achievements were examined. A mixed design was used in the research. A case study, which was one of the research methods, was used for qualitative data, and an independent sample t-tests and paired sample t-tests were used for quantitative data. During the data collection process, the experimental and control groups were given a pre-test before the application, then news videos containing environmental problems were watched by the experimental group, while the control group was taught with universal visuals. At the end of the lesson, the same achievement test was applied to both groups as a post-test and the change was examined. The whole application took a total of 8 lesson hours for both groups. As a result of the study, a statistically significant difference was found between the achievements of the experimental group students and the success of the control group students. In the qualitative data of the experimental group students, it was observed that they mostly commented on water pollution, air pollution, and forest destruction. In addition, the problems that individuals perceived least correctly were the visual pollution, noise pollution, and light pollution, accepted as the normality of big city life intertwined with daily life. It is clear that student-centred teaching models, like the Karpus Learning Cycle model will further increase the learning and student’s awareness.

Di Indonesia, pendidikan bertujuan untuk mengembangkan potensi peserta didik agar menjadi manusia yang beriman dan bertakwa kepada Tuhan Yang Maha Esa, berakhlak mulia, sehat, berilmu, cakap, kreatif, mandiri dan menjadi warga negara yang demokratis serta bertanggung jawab. Berhubungan dengan isu lingkungan, sekolah perlu memberikan pengetahuan lingkungan kepada peserta didik demi membangun manusia yang sehat dan bertanggung jawab terhadap lingkungan. Selain itu, lingkungan sekolah yang sehat juga dapat meningkatkan kemampuan hidup sehat sehingga peserta didik dapat belajar, tumbuh, dan berkembang secara harmonis dan optimal menjadi manusia yang berkualitas. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, sekolah perlu mengintegrasikan pendidikan lingkungan dalam kurikulumnya. Pendidikan lingkungan juga merupakan upaya untuk memberikan pengetahuan lingkungan pada peserta didik demi meningkatkan perilaku peduli lingkungan dan mengurangi kerusakan lingkungan. Hal ini didasari oleh minimnya perilaku peduli lingkungan di Indonesia meskipun pemerintah telah melakukan upaya-upaya untuk meningkatkannya. Oleh karena itu, pemahaman hubungan peserta didik terhadap isu lingkungan serta cara menumbuhkan kepedulian peserta didik terhadap isu lingkungan perlu untuk didalami. Pendalaman tersebut dapat dilakukan menggunakan pendekatan dan metode kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan datanya berdasarkan studi literatur dan dokumentasi dari hasil-hasil penelitian terdahulu dan teori terkait isu lingkungan. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah metode interaktif yang meliputi tiga tahap yaitu reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Dari hasil studi literatur diperoleh informasi bahwa terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara tingkat pengetahuan dan perilaku mencintai lingkungan peserta didik. Meskipun demikian, kontribusi tingkat pengetahuan tentang lingkungan hidup dengan sikap peduli lingkungan peserta didik masih tergolong rendah. Oleh karena itu, perlu pengintegrasian literasi lingkungan pada kurikulum pendidikan. Apabila sekolah dapat menerapkan kurikulum ini secara berkelanjutan maka pengetahuan dan kepedulian peserta didik terhadap lingkungan akan terjaga dan berimbas positif pada keberlangsungan lingkungan hidup.
