Secondary-phase-modulation method for open-loop fiber-optic gyroscopes

Abstract: A proposed method of secondary phase modulation for open-loop fiber-optic gyroscopes is examined in general terms. To detect the rotation rate of a system through a beat-frequency channel, we employ linearly combined signals with different frequencies for the optical phase modulation. We find that the proper combinations of the modulation frequencies can optimize the sensitivity of gyroscopes. With this method we can employ a high-frequency band for optical phase modulations while keeping relative a lower-freq… Show more

“…Then, the photodetector collects the produced interferometric signal. The phase modulator is used to apply a sinusoidal or square-wave dynamic phase bias to light path, thus increasing the sensitivity of the sensor [15]. When modulation frequency of phase bias is high enough, electronic noise is avoided.…”

“…Although both interferometers can be built according to the basic principle, the interferometer employed in bulk optics was modified of its traditional configuration, because with these changes a remarkable increment in its sensibility is achieved. Knowing that the system don't depend on the optical path that beams follow in counterpropagation, but it depends of the area that contains; a modification that help in the appropriate distribution of the elements of the system was made [20].…”

“…Broadband fiber optic light sources have important uses in spectral analysis, fiber optic communication, fiber optic sensing, etc. [1]. The development of fiber amplifiers and lasers has also led to the creation of spontaneous broadband emission (ASE) light sources based on the amplification of optical fibers doped with rare earth elements and the first pioneering use of erbium-doped ASE light sources in fiber optic gyroscopes at Stanford University in 1989 [2].…”

“…The second type is the quantum dot fiber amplifier with liquid, or liquid solidified fiber core. In recent years, UV gel has been used as the core substrate, and PbSe or PbS colloidal quantum dots are mixed and pumped into the hollow core fiber to form a quantum dot fiber [1]. The third type is the quantum dot fiber amplifier with a glass core substrate.…”
