“…Although apparently widespread in marine-derived Streptomyces isolates [18,19], the production of surugamides has also been reported in the S. albidoflavus strain J1074 [16,22], a derivative of the soil isolate S. albus G [23,24]. The S. albidoflavus strain J1074 is a well-characterised Streptomyces isolate, which is frequently used as a model for the genus and has commonly been successfully employed in the heterologous expression of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) [25,26,27,28,29].…”

“…This strain was originally classified as an S. albus isolate, however, due to more recent taxonomy studies, it has been reclassified as a S. albidoflavus species isolate [30,31]. Interestingly, surugamides and their derivatives have been shown to only be produced by S. albidoflavus J1074 under specific conditions, such as when employing chemical stress elicitors [16], and more recently when cultivating the strain in a soytone-based liquid-based medium SG2 [22].…”

“…In this work, the KO-1297L strain was obtained as a spontaneous streptomycin-sensitive (Str S ) KO-1297 derivative. Streptomycetes were cultivated on TSA, GYM, SG2, TSB, and SFM media (Tanaka et al, 2009;Koshla et al, 2017;Koshla et al, 2019) at 30°C. The strains Bacillus cereus ATCC19637, Staphylococcus aureus 209P, and Debaryomyces hansenii VKM9 were used as test culture for determining the antibiotic activity of rpsL mutants.…”

“…The known antifungal compounds produced endogenously consist of candicidins, antimycins, alteramides and surugamides [ 17 ]. Recently, it was also revealed that certain media such as SG2 was able to enhance production of these secondary metabolites [ 18 ], which was attributable to the overall increased transcriptional activity evidenced by RNA-seq studies on the organism grown in both SG2 and the more conventional TSB media. Additionally, novel strains of S. albus have been constructed with their native biosynthetic gene clusters removed [ 10 ], consequently leading not only to better compound detection (due to no background from endogenous secondary metabolites) but also to overall higher production yields compared to the ancestor S. albus strain and other S. coelicolor hosts.…”
