Secondary metabolic profiles and anticancer actions from fruit extracts of immature pomegranates

Abstract: Immature fruits from Punica granatum L. thinning are a neglected side product of pomegranate production with cumbersome disposal costs for farmers. To explore value potential of immature fruits from pomegranate ‘Wonderful’ cultivars, the compositional landscapes and antitumorigenic activities of pomegranate extracts from two different stages of maturation were assessed. Cancer cell proliferation and cytotoxicity was quantified in human lung H1299 and colon HCT116 adenocarcinomas by crystal violet staining, MTS… Show more

“…Moreover, among anthocyanins, cyanidin 3- O- glucoside was detected in all the samples, whereas delphinidin 3- O -glucoside was found only in M13 ( Table 3 , Figure S4 ). These results were in agreement with previous reports of the specialized metabolite composition in pomegranate peels [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ].…”

“…Green pomegranate peel extract showed anticancer properties in human lung adenocarcinoma and human colorectal carcinoma cells in vitro . Immature peel is an abundant source of polyphenols, particularly gallotannins like granatin B. Granatin B has antiproliferative and apoptotic activities against tumoral cells (Russo et al, 2021 ). Since punicalagin and granatin B arrest cells in the S-phase, they seem to be a good therapeutic agent against colorectal cancer (Chen et al, 2022 ).…”

“…Pomegranate juice consumption was demonstrated to directly affect insulin levels in type 2 diabetic patients and could contribute to additional control of glucose levels [ 4 ]. Extensive studies were performed to evaluate the anticancer [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ] and antimicrobial activity of pomegranate extracts [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ].…”
